Red-Bellied Piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a large, long-lived South American fish for experienced keepers with a purpose-built species aquarium. It is not a novelty fish, a community centrepiece or a suitable choice for a newly cycled tank. Juveniles may be only a few centimetres long when supplied, but they grow quickly, produce substantial waste and need an adult plan from the beginning.
What you are buying: a quantity of one means one unsexed fish from the size option selected on this page. It does not mean a pair, breeding pair or complete group. Size bands describe approximate supplied length, not final adult size, and sex cannot be guaranteed in juveniles. The accepted scientific name is Pygocentrus nattereri. Our Petra supplier record uses the older combination Serrasalmus nattereri, which remains common in historic aquarium literature and trade catalogues. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes currently accepts Pygocentrus nattereri, so both names refer to the same product here. This identity bridge matters: a Black Piranha, Caribe Piranha, Wimple Piranha or Red-Bellied Pacu is a different fish and must not be substituted into this care plan.

Red-Bellied Piranha belongs to Serrasalmidae, the South American family that also includes pacus and silver dollars. The fish develops a deep, laterally compressed body, a strong head and powerful dentition. Juveniles are usually brighter silver with dark flank spots and a developing orange-red underside. Mature fish become heavier-bodied; the spots can become less prominent and the throat, chest, pelvic region and anal fin often carry stronger red or orange colour.
FishBase reports a much larger maximum published size than the approximate 30-35 cm commonly used for aquarium planning. A maximum record is not a promise that every captive fish will reach it, but it is a warning against choosing a tank around the supplied juvenile. Aquarium length and front-to-back width must allow a deep adult to turn, avoid dominant fish and move away from disturbances. Water volume alone cannot correct a narrow footprint.
Sexing juveniles from appearance is unreliable. Mature females are often described as fuller-bodied, especially when carrying eggs, but body condition, feeding and viewing angle can create the same impression. We therefore sell these fish as unsexed unless a specific option explicitly says otherwise. Colour is also not a dependable sex marker. Stress, age, background, lighting, hierarchy, nutrition and water quality all affect how red or dark a fish appears.
The four gallery pictures on this listing are representative aquarium illustrations based on supplier reference material; they are not photographs of the exact individual dispatched. Natural individuals vary, and no illustration can guarantee the exact spot pattern, red coverage, body depth or fin position of a live animal.
The accepted species has a broad South American distribution. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes record it from the Amazon and Paraguay-Parana systems, northeastern Brazilian coastal rivers and the Essequibo system. It occurs in freshwater habitats that include river channels, tributaries, floodplain lakes, creeks, interconnected ponds and seasonally inundated areas. That range explains why one single decorative "Amazon biotope" recipe cannot represent every population.
Wild diet and behaviour are more complex than the film stereotype. Red-Bellied Piranhas are opportunistic generalists that take fish, aquatic invertebrates, insects, worms, plant material, fruit and carrion according to place and season. They do not spend every hour attacking large animals. Aquarium fish are often cautious, highly alert and prone to sudden dashing when exposed, cornered or surprised.
A published study of shoaling in this species found evidence consistent with grouping as an anti-predator response. In practical aquarium terms, a group is not a licence to crowd fish into a small tank, and it does not mean cooperative pack hunting. Social relationships can include spacing, hierarchy, chasing and opportunistic biting. Each fish needs enough room and visual structure to avoid constant pressure from its neighbours.
Juveniles tend to show tighter schooling, while adults often form looser groups. A stable display should look watchful rather than frantic. Repeated collision with glass, persistent cornering, refusal to leave cover, badly split fins, one fish excluded from food or an individual continually pinned away from the group are husbandry warnings. Check water quality, light, layout, group composition and space rather than assuming that nervousness is normal.
A 300-litre aquarium should not be presented as a lifetime home for a normal adult group. It may serve as a carefully managed juvenile grow-out in some circumstances, but the fish must not outgrow the keeper's next step. Aqueon's current care guide uses at least 100 US gallons, about 380 litres, as an adult starting point and adds that the requirement rises with fish count. A group needs substantially more usable swimming area, filtration and escape distance than a single adult plan.
Choose a long, wide aquarium on a stand and floor rated for the complete operating weight. Include water, glass, cabinet, substrate, rock, wood, filters and any sump when assessing the load. Confirm that the aquarium can be installed, serviced and eventually moved without unsafe improvisation. Large custom systems also need a realistic route for water changes, drainage and emergency access.
Footprint comes before decorative volume. A tall narrow display can carry many litres while giving a deep-bodied fish poor turning space. Leave broad lanes through the middle of the aquarium and avoid creating a single dead-end territory. Heavy wood and rock must be stable without relying on loose substrate for support. Keep enough clearance to siphon waste from feeding areas and to inspect every fish from more than one angle.
A close-fitting lid is essential because startled fish can jump or strike the cover. Close openings around cables, returns and pipework without restricting gas exchange. Use guards or a sump for heaters where possible. Any item inside the aquarium should tolerate impact, and sharp rock, brittle ornaments, exposed heating elements and unstable stacks should be excluded.
These fish create a high bioload because they grow large and tear or crush substantial foods. Use oversized biological and mechanical filtration, but avoid making the aquarium a high-velocity channel. A sump, multiple external filters or another redundant arrangement can provide media volume and keep equipment away from the fish. Whatever system is chosen must be accessible for frequent mechanical cleaning without stripping all mature biological media at once.
Do not select a filter only from the turnover number printed on its box. Real flow falls when pipework, media, head height and debris are added. The useful question is whether the installed system can capture food fragments, keep oxygen available and process ammonia while leaving quieter areas. A spray bar, broad return or carefully directed outlets can distribute flow without forcing every fish to swim into a jet.
Rinse dirty mechanical media in removed aquarium water or appropriately treated water. Do not wash all biological media under untreated chlorinated tap water. Stagger maintenance across filters so one clean does not erase the whole bacterial population. Siphon food fragments before they decay, clean intake strainers and inspect impellers, hoses and overflows for reduced flow.
Provide strong gas exchange, especially in warm weather and after a large meal. Warm water carries less dissolved oxygen, while large fish and bacterial decomposition consume it quickly. Surface agitation, a properly designed overflow and backup air can all help. Rapid gill movement, clustering around a return, loss of balance or sudden inactivity requires immediate checks of temperature, oxygen, ammonia and nitrite.
The supplier record gives 23-27°C, pH 5.5-7.5 and 5-22 dGH. FishBase gives the same temperature and pH band and lists hardness up to about 20 dH. For this listing we use 23-27°C, pH 5.5-7.5 and roughly 5-20 dGH as a practical evidence-backed range. These numbers describe tolerance and planning, not a reason to force water to the edge of every range.
Stability and cleanliness matter more than reaching one fashionable pH. Test the source water and mature aquarium for pH, GH and KH. Do not add acid or alkaline products without understanding buffering; a rapid swing can be more damaging than a stable value that is slightly different from a care-sheet target.
Ammonia and nitrite should be undetectable. Keep nitrate controlled through stocking, feeding, filtration and regular partial water changes. There is no universal water-change percentage that replaces testing: a heavily fed adult group may need more frequent work than a juvenile system. Record results and adjust the schedule before nitrate or visible debris climbs.
Match replacement water for temperature and treat it for chlorine or chloramine as appropriate. Add it in a way that does not blast fish, collapse cover or expose heaters. Base corrective maintenance on measured water quality and the actual emergency; do not let this care page delay an urgently needed, properly prepared water change. Consistent routine work is the best way to reduce the chance of an emergency.
Check seals, hoses, unions, valves, heaters and electrical safety during every maintenance session. Large aquariums move a great deal of water, so a small unattended leak or blocked overflow can become serious. Keep electrical connections above possible water paths, form drip loops and follow the equipment manufacturer's installation instructions.
Daily observation should be brief but deliberate. Count every fish, confirm normal breathing and posture, check that no individual is trapped or excluded, inspect the floor around the aquarium for water, and listen for a filter or pump that sounds different. Watch at least part of a meal so appetite and access to food are known. Remove visible leftovers rather than leaving them for the next scheduled clean.
At each water test, record the result instead of relying on memory. Trends are often more useful than one isolated number: rising nitrate, gradually falling pH, slower filter flow or an increasing amount of uneaten food can reveal a problem before fish show severe symptoms. Date filter work as well, because repeatedly cleaning one unit while forgetting another undermines redundancy.
During a routine partial water change, siphon the areas where food settles, inspect hidden spaces behind wood and confirm that every intake remains guarded and unobstructed. Do not dismantle the whole aquarium at once. Keeping familiar cover and mature filter media in place reduces stress and preserves biological stability. Clean viewing panes slowly so sudden reflections and tools do not trigger a group panic.
Review the adult plan as juveniles grow. Measure fish conservatively from photographs against a known reference rather than repeatedly netting them. Recalculate feeding size, waste load, turning room and hierarchy. If the next aquarium, filter or divider will be needed in six months, it should be sourced and cycled before the current setup becomes inadequate.
A large warm predator system needs a written power-cut plan. Know which device supplies oxygen, which pump maintains the biological filter and how long backup equipment can operate. Battery air pumps, spare air stones and an emergency power source can protect oxygenation, but they must be tested and maintained rather than left unopened in a cupboard.
After a prolonged outage, do not restart a stagnant external filter blindly. Water and trapped organic matter inside an unpowered unit can become oxygen-poor. Inspect and service it according to the manufacturer's instructions before returning that water to the aquarium. Increase aeration, monitor fish closely and test ammonia and nitrite as circulation returns.
Keep spare dechlorinator, a suitable container, basic hose fittings, a thermometer and a tested means of moving water. A leak plan should identify how to isolate pumps, protect electrics and hold fish without placing a heavy improvised container on an unsafe surface. Emergency equipment must be large enough for the animals you will have as adults, not only the juveniles you have today.
Dark sand or smooth gravel, substantial aquarium-safe wood and shaded zones can help nervous fish settle. Keep the central route open and make sure no ornament can trap a startled adult. Rock and wood should rest securely, not on a loose mound that can shift during cleaning. Avoid sharp edges that can turn a panic response into a wound.
Moderate or subdued lighting is usually more comfortable than an exposed, intensely lit display. Bring lights up and down gradually when possible, and avoid switching a bright aquarium on in a completely dark room. A consistent day-night schedule is preferable to very long illumination. If plants are included, choose lighting for their real needs while still providing shade and visual cover for the fish.
Live plants may be uprooted, damaged or eaten, and delicate aquascaping can make waste removal difficult. Robust attached plants may work in some systems, but plant survival must not be promised. Artificial plants can provide cover if they are smooth, colourfast and securely anchored. Leave space around every feature so uneaten food can be found and removed.
Tannin-stained water from suitable wood or botanicals is not automatically dirty water, but colour does not prove safety either. Test nitrogen waste and maintain the filter. Introduce botanicals gradually because decomposition and acidity can affect oxygen, pH and maintenance demand. Never use wood, leaves or stone of uncertain chemical or pesticide history.
This is a species-only fish, not a candidate for a normal community aquarium. Other fish may become prey, competitors or targets during stress and feeding. Even a species that appears to coexist for months can be injured without warning as piranhas grow or hierarchy changes. Plecos and large robust fish are sometimes shown with them, but isolated examples are not a safe retail recommendation.
Experienced care sources commonly recommend a group of five or more similar-sized Red-Bellied Piranhas, introduced together into suitable space. Aqueon notes that some keepers maintain an individual instead, but groups of five or more are used to avoid the instability seen in small groups. Do not assume that two, three or four creates a safer compromise. The correct choice depends on adult accommodation and specialist experience, not a desire to fit the fish into the tank already owned.
Group members should be close in size and able to feed without one fish monopolising the food. Watch for repeated targeting, missing scales, ragged fins, one animal becoming thin or a fish isolated from the main swimming area. A divider and separate mature holding system may be needed immediately; waiting until wounds are severe is not a plan.
Do not confuse relatives with companions. A Red-Bellied Pacu can become much larger and has different feeding and housing implications. Silver dollars are related serrasalmids but are generally chosen for a very different community-style display. Red-Bellied Piranha is an omnivorous generalist with a strong preference for meaty food, not an animal that must be fed live fish. Use a varied rotation appropriate to the fish's size: quality sinking or slow-sinking carnivore pellets, frozen krill, mussel, prawn, insects, worms and clean pieces of suitable fish flesh can all have a place. Some individuals also take plant material. Variety is safer than building the entire diet around one rich item.
Juveniles need smaller portions and more frequent observation than established adults. Feed where every individual can be watched, distribute food across more than one point and stop before leftovers spread through the tank. Growth should be steady rather than forced. A swollen abdomen after every meal is not proof of good care.
Do not use live feeder goldfish or other feeder fish as the routine diet. Feeders can introduce parasites and bacteria, may be nutritionally unbalanced and can provoke frantic feeding that makes injury and waste control harder. Never release unwanted feeder fish or aquarium livestock into outdoor water. Quarantine and source quality matter for every animal or food entering the system.
Avoid chicken, beef heart and other mammal or bird meat as routine staples. Their fat profile is not designed for fish metabolism. Avoid processed human food, seasoned seafood and anything exposed to salt, oil or sauce. Remove uneaten fragments promptly; protein decomposing behind wood can overwhelm water quality long after the feeding display is over.

The exaggerated man-eating reputation should not replace sensible safety. Aquarium piranhas are often shy and do not normally seek human contact, but they have powerful teeth and can bite when trapped, startled, feeding or defending a nest. Never hand-feed them, never provoke a feeding response for entertainment and never put fingers between a fish and its escape route.
Know where every fish is before placing a hand in the aquarium. Use long tools and feeding tongs where appropriate. For extensive work, pause feeding, reduce disturbance and use a secure divider or another method designed for the system. Do not crowd fish into a net. Larger animals can damage ordinary nets and bags, so transport requires rigid, appropriately sized containers and an experienced plan.
Move slowly around the aquarium and avoid sudden shadows or impacts on the glass. Close doors and control other pets during maintenance. Keep the lid secured after every session. If a bite occurs, leave the aquarium safely secured, control bleeding and seek appropriate medical advice rather than continuing the task.
Basic aquarium hygiene still applies. Cover cuts, wear suitable gloves when medically appropriate, wash hands and tools after contact with aquarium water, and keep food-preparation equipment separate. Do not use household sprays, soap or cleaning chemicals around an open aquarium.
Use a fully cycled quarantine aquarium large enough for the fish being observed. A tiny isolation box is not suitable for a growing piranha. Match temperature and chemistry closely, provide secure cover and use equipment that can handle meaty feeding. Quarantine tools should not be moved between systems without disinfection.
Observe appetite, breathing, posture, fins, skin and waste. New fish can carry parasites or infections without obvious signs on arrival. The appropriate quarantine period depends on symptoms, source history, disease risk and aquatic-veterinary or specialist advice; a fixed short interval is not suitable for every case. Do not end observation just because the display group looks lonely.
When adding fish to an established group, size and timing matter. A much smaller newcomer can be targeted. Rearranging some decor, feeding carefully and introducing similar-sized fish may reduce immediate territorial pressure, but no technique guarantees acceptance. Keep a mature separation option ready before the introduction begins.
Acclimation should minimise abrupt temperature and chemistry change without leaving fish for an excessive time in shipping water. Follow the current livestock instructions supplied with the order and prepare the receiving aquarium before opening the container. Never add shipping water to the display unnecessarily.
A healthy fish should have clear eyes, steady breathing, intact fins, even body condition and a controlled response to food and movement. Juvenile spotting and belly colour vary, so colour alone is not a diagnosis. Use daily observation to learn what is normal for the group.
Investigate rapid breathing, clamped fins, white spots, flashing, ulcers, cotton-like growth, swelling, hollow flanks, repeated crashing, unusual isolation or refusal of food. Test temperature, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and oxygen before assuming a named disease. Poor water quality can produce the same outward signs as infection and will also make treatment less effective.
Injuries from panic or aggression can become infected. Separate a persistently attacked fish before the wound worsens, using a suitable mature system rather than an uncycled emergency container. Photograph changes over time and seek an aquatic-experienced veterinary opinion for serious wounds, unexplained losses or treatment uncertainty.
Do not medicate the main aquarium blindly. Piranhas can be sensitive to some treatments, and product instructions vary with species, water chemistry and active ingredient. Confirm the diagnosis, calculate actual water volume and protect oxygenation and filtration. Never mix treatments unless a qualified source confirms that combination.
Breeding is an advanced project, not a reason to buy an arbitrary male and female. Juveniles cannot be reliably sexed, and a retail quantity does not guarantee a compatible pair. Mature groups may form spawning pairs after conditioning and environmental changes, but aggression can increase sharply during courtship and nest defence.
Males may clear a shallow pit near substrate or roots. Eggs are deposited in the nesting area and guarded. Specialist sources report hatching after roughly two to five days depending on temperature and conditions. Adults and group members can threaten eggs, fry or one another, so the breeder needs several mature systems and a plan before spawning begins.
Fry require clean, stable water and correctly sized foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp as they become free-swimming. Growth can be uneven and cannibalism may occur, which means frequent grading and multiple grow-out tanks. A successful spawn can produce a very large number of young; responsible breeding includes legal, ethical and practical homes for them before eggs are raised.
Do not trigger spawning with extreme temperature or chemistry changes. A large change is sometimes reported as a cue, but it should stay within safe, matched conditions. Sudden stress is not a breeding method. If the aquarium cannot safely accommodate territorial behaviour, do not attempt the project.
Rules depend on location and how the fish is kept. Current GOV.UK guidance for England and Wales links an official Fish Health Inspectorate list of freshwater genera covered for ornamental, scientific or conservation keeping in indoor aquaria. That list includes Pygocentrus and also includes the older genus Serrasalmus. It does not authorise release, outdoor escape or every possible commercial activity.

It is the wrong choice for a desktop aquarium, a first tropical setup, a mixed community, an unplanned pair or a keeper expecting a fish to remain at its supplied size. It is also unsuitable when the adult tank is only an intention without the space, floor support or budget to build it.
If the adult commitment is too large, compare the active freshwater fish collection before ordering. A silver dollar offers related South American shape and shoaling behaviour without being the same predator, although it still needs group and tank-size research.
