A single male Betta needs at least 20L with a heater, filter with gentle flow, and plenty of plants or decor. The common 'Betta bowl' is cruel — Bettas are tropical river fish that need warmth (24–28°C), clean water and cover, not a vase.
No. Males are strictly territorial and will fight to the death. Even in large tanks they do not tolerate each other. Females can sometimes be kept in a sorority of 5+ in a 75L+ tank, but this still needs careful observation and plenty of line-of-sight breaks.
Peaceful, non-nippy tankmates that won't trigger aggression: Corydoras, Kuhli Loaches, Otocinclus, Ember Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras in a 40L+ tank. Avoid anything with long fins (Angelfish, Guppy males) or fin-nippers (Tiger Barbs, Serpae Tetras).
Feed 2–4 small pellets twice a day, or vary between pellets, frozen bloodworm and daphnia. Fast one day a week — Bettas are prone to bloating and constipation. Their stomach is roughly the size of their eye, so less is more.
Bubble nests are a healthy natural behaviour — the male builds them on the water surface when he feels settled and ready to breed. It means your water quality and temperature are good. You don't need a female; nest-building is instinctive regardless of mate availability.
