Surface-dwelling Malayan Halfbeak for a mature covered aquarium with floating cover, steady hard water and gentle tank mates.
Dermogenys pusilla
Malayan Halfbeak are a shoaling species — they need 6+ to feel safe and show their full colour. Larger shoals stay calmer, eat better, and look stunning.

Malayan Halfbeak (Dermogenys pusilla) is a slim surface-dwelling livebearer for keepers who enjoy unusual behaviour as much as colour. It spends most of its time just under the surface, so a covered aquarium, floating plants and calm feeding areas are more important than heavy bottom decor.
| Scientific name | Dermogenys pusilla |
|---|---|
| Adult size | 6-7 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 80 litres or larger |
| Temperature | 24-28 C |
| pH | 7.0-8.0 |
| Temperament | Peaceful surface livebearer; males can spar, so space and cover matter |
| Diet | Surface feeder; small floating foods, live or frozen insects, crustaceans and fine prepared foods |
Keep this halfbeak in a mature aquarium with steady, slightly alkaline water and a close-fitting lid. It is peaceful with calm community fish, but males may spar with each other, so give the group room and broken sight lines at the surface.
Avoid boisterous fin nippers and very small fry-sized tank mates. Floating plants help the fish feel secure and make feeding easier.
Feed from the surface with small floating flakes, micro pellets and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae and baby brine shrimp. Offer small meals so food is taken before it sinks away from them.
