It is a small South American dwarf cichlid of around 5 cm and one of the most ornamental rams available to UK keepers.
As with every ram, success comes down to warm, soft, acidic water and a stable, mature aquarium. Hold the temperature in the upper tropical range at 26-30°C, keep the pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and aim for soft water of 1-10 dGH in a tank of at least 60 litres. Provide a planted scape with driftwood and gentle hiding places where a pair can feel secure. Keep it as a pair or small group and watch the water quality closely, as this variant is sensitive to deteriorating conditions.
It is an omnivore that takes frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, micro pellets and flakes readily, feeding chiefly in the lower part of the tank.
