Cichlids are one of the most diverse fish families in the hobby. From tiny apistogrammas to massive oscars, this guide covers the basics of keeping them well.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Blue Red Head Ram (Papiliochromis ramirezi) is a colourful selection of the ever-popular ram cichlid, its name describing the blue-bodied, red-headed look that makes it such a draw in a planted aquarium. A small South American dwarf cichlid reaching about 5 cm, it brings real colour and personality to a peaceful community tank.
Rams are warm-water fish that prefer soft, acidic conditions, and this variant is no exception. Hold the temperature high at 26-30°C, keep the pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and aim for soft water of 1-10 dGH in a tank of at least 60 litres. A gently planted set-up with driftwood and shaded retreats gives a pair the security they need. It is best kept as a pair or small group, and it is sensitive to poor water quality, so stable parameters and good maintenance are key.
As an omnivore it takes frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp alongside micro pellets and flakes, feeding mostly in the lower part of the tank. Despite its showy looks it is a peaceful fish, which makes it an excellent colourful focal point for a calm community of the right size. The contrast of blue body and red head is at its boldest in a healthy, well-conditioned fish, so consistent warmth, soft acidic water and steady maintenance bring out the most striking display. Introduce new rams only to a fully matured, stable tank, and feed a varied diet of frozen and prepared foods to keep colour and condition at their peak; treated well, this is one of the most rewarding splashes of colour you can add to a peaceful, planted community.
Small tetras, corydoras, otocinclus and rasboras all make good neighbours for the Blue Red Head Ram. Keep it away from aggressive cichlids, large fish and fin-nippers. Because it dislikes poor conditions, mature the tank fully before adding it. Each ram ships with a licensed live-animal courier under our live arrival guarantee for safe delivery across the UK.
