Freshwater shrimp add colour and practical algae control. Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, Crystal Reds, and more for planted tanks.
Cherry and Amano shrimp can live with very small peaceful fish like Otocinclus, pygmy Corydoras and small Rasboras. Avoid any fish with a mouth big enough to eat an adult shrimp. For breeding colonies, a dedicated shrimp-only tank gives the best survival rate for babies.
Shrimp graze biofilm and algae constantly, but they also appreciate sinking algae wafers, blanched spinach or courgette, and specialist shrimp pellets. Feed sparingly — once every 2–3 days is plenty. Overfeeding causes ammonia spikes which kill shrimp faster than fish.
Cherry shrimp are forgiving: pH 6.8–7.8, GH 6–12, temperature 20–26°C. Crystal Reds and Caridina species are stricter and need softer, more acidic water (pH 5.8–6.8, GH 4–6) — suited to RO water with remineraliser. Always drip-acclimate shrimp over 1–2 hours.
Neocaridina shrimp like Cherries live 1–2 years. Amano shrimp live 2–3 years and grow much larger. Bamboo and Fan shrimp can live 3–5 years. In a cycled, stable tank a healthy colony continually breeds to replace losses, so the colony outlives individuals.
Copper in tap water is the most common cause — it is lethal to shrimp at levels fish tolerate. Always use a dechlorinator rated for invertebrates and consider RO water for water changes. Avoid medications containing copper, and drip-acclimate shrimp during setup or rehoming.
