It is a Vietnamese labyrinth fish with smoky blue-black colour, iridescent fin highlights and a bold, alert personality. It suits aquarists who want a hardy feature fish with real character, provided the aquarium is covered, planted and planned around its territorial nature.
Black Paradise Fish have the classic Macropodus shape: a laterally compressed body, surface-oriented mouth and flowing fins. Mature males usually carry stronger finnage and deeper colour, with dark scale margins, blue-black fin membranes and a confident display posture. Supplier catalogues and older aquarium notes may list this fish as Macropodus concolor, but current references treat Black Paradise Fish as Macropodus spechti.
