The Black Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a stunning colour variant of one of the most popular marine aquarium fish in the world. These juveniles, measuring 2-3 cm, are a superb choice for aquarists looking for a hardy, characterful saltwater fish with plenty of personality. Known for their bold behaviour, engaging swimming style and strong compatibility with reef setups, black Ocellaris clownfish are a favourite for both new and experienced marine keepers.
This species is widely appreciated for its resilience, manageable adult size and peaceful nature. In the aquarium, they often become confident and interactive, especially once settled. They may host in anemones, but this is not essential for their wellbeing in captivity. With stable water quality, a suitable diet and sensible tank mates, they can thrive for many years.

Amphiprion ocellaris is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including areas around northern Australia, Southeast Asia and nearby reef systems. In the wild, clownfish live among sheltered coral reefs, lagoons and protected coastal waters where they form close associations with sea anemones. These habitats provide both shelter and access to food, while the anemone offers protection from predators.
The black colour form seen in the aquarium trade is a selectively bred variant of the classic Ocellaris Clownfish. While the colour pattern differs, the care requirements remain the same as the standard species. Their natural environment is warm, stable and highly oxygenated, so they do best in mature marine aquariums with consistent salinity and excellent filtration.
Black Ocellaris Clownfish are among the most beginner-friendly marine fish, but they still require a properly cycled saltwater aquarium. A minimum of 100 litres is recommended for a single fish or bonded pair, with larger tanks preferred if keeping them in a community reef system. Stable water conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers, so regular testing and maintenance are essential.
Provide plenty of live rock for grazing, shelter and territory definition. A gentle to moderate flow is ideal, along with strong biological filtration and good surface agitation. These fish are reef safe and can be kept with corals, soft corals and many invertebrates. If you wish to keep an anemone, ensure the aquarium is mature and the anemone species is suitable for captive care.
Juveniles of 2-3 cm are small and may be vulnerable to aggressive tank mates, so introduce them carefully and avoid housing them with large predatory species. As they mature, clownfish can become territorial, especially if they pair up or claim a host site. This is normal behaviour and usually manageable in appropriately sized tanks.
Black Ocellaris Clownfish are omnivores and should be offered a varied diet to maintain colour, health and immune function. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen foods and chopped meaty items. A varied feeding routine helps support growth in juveniles and keeps adults in peak condition.
Suitable foods include marine pellets, spirulina-based flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped krill and finely prepared seafood mixes. Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as they will consume in a few minutes. Overfeeding can quickly affect water quality, so remove any uneaten food promptly.
For best results, supplement the diet with a quality marine vitamin or HUFA enrichment from time to time, particularly when feeding frozen foods. A balanced diet is especially important for young fish during their growth phase.
Black Ocellaris Clownfish are generally peaceful, though they can become assertive around their chosen territory or host site. They are best kept with other calm marine species that will not outcompete or bully them. In reef aquariums, they are usually considered a very good choice thanks to their compatibility with corals and many invertebrates.
Suitable tank mates include gobies, blennies, firefish, royal grammas, small wrasses, chromis and many peaceful reef-safe invertebrates. If keeping a pair, it is often best to introduce them together or allow a juvenile pair to form naturally. Avoid mixing them with highly aggressive damselfish, large predatory fish, puffers, triggers, lionfish or other species that may view them as prey.
When housed with other clownfish species, territorial disputes may occur, especially in smaller aquariums. For this reason, it is usually best to keep one species of clownfish per tank unless the system is large and carefully planned.
