Amphiprion ocellaris
Iconic reef-safe clownfish, perfect for marine beginners. Hardy, colourful and full of personality.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Clown Anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is one of the most recognisable marine fish in the hobby, loved for its bright orange colour, bold white bands and lively personality. This 2-3 cm juvenile is a fantastic choice for aquarists looking to add a hardy, engaging fish to a saltwater or reef aquarium. Despite their small size, clownfish are full of character and quickly become the focal point of the tank.
Amphiprion ocellaris is widely regarded as one of the best marine fish for beginners, provided the aquarium is fully cycled and stable. They are generally reef-safe, compatible with many corals and invertebrates, and can be kept singly, as a pair, or in carefully planned groups when space allows. Their captive-bred availability also makes them an excellent choice for responsible marine fishkeeping.
At Tropical Fish Co, we carefully select healthy marine stock and offer fast UK delivery plus a live arrival guarantee for peace of mind when ordering your new fish online.

Amphiprion ocellaris is native to the Indo-West Pacific, including waters around northern Australia, Southeast Asia and nearby reef systems. In the wild, clown anemonefish live among sheltered coral reefs and lagoons, where they form a symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. The anemone provides protection from predators, while the clownfish helps by cleaning, aerating and defending its host from intruders.
These fish are adapted to warm, stable marine environments with plenty of rockwork, crevices and gentle water movement. Captive-bred specimens are now widely available and are generally hardier and better suited to aquarium life than wild-caught fish. Juveniles, like this 2-3 cm specimen, usually settle in well and adapt quickly to prepared foods.
A stable marine aquarium is essential for clownfish. Although they are hardy, they still require excellent water quality and a fully matured system. A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a single fish, but a larger aquarium is recommended if you plan to keep a pair or a community of reef-safe species. For best results, use live rock to create caves, overhangs and sheltered areas that mimic their natural habitat.
Water movement should be moderate rather than overly strong, as clownfish prefer calmer areas of the tank. Good filtration, regular maintenance and consistent salinity are key. Keep salinity around 1.023-1.026 specific gravity, and aim for stable reef conditions with low ammonia and nitrite, and minimal nitrate. Because marine fish are sensitive to sudden changes, acclimation should be slow and careful.
If you wish to keep a clownfish with a host anemone, ensure the aquarium is mature, well-lit and large enough for the anemone species you choose. However, an anemone is not required for the fish to thrive. Many captive-bred clownfish live happily without one and will often adopt a coral, rock or ornament as a territory focus instead.
Clown anemonefish are omnivores and should be offered a varied diet to keep them healthy, colourful and active. In the aquarium they readily accept quality marine pellets, frozen foods and small meaty items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill and finely prepared seafood blends. A little algae-based or spirulina-enriched food can also help provide balance.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what the fish will consume in a few minutes. Juveniles may benefit from more frequent, smaller meals. A varied diet supports strong immune function, good growth and vibrant colouration. As with all marine fish, avoid overfeeding to help maintain excellent water quality.
Amphiprion ocellaris is usually peaceful, but can become territorial, especially once established or when breeding. They are best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive marine fish that will not bully them or compete too heavily for space. Suitable companions often include gobies, blennies, firefish, small wrasses, chromis and other reef-safe community species, depending on tank size and aquascape.
Avoid housing clownfish with large predatory fish, very aggressive species, or tank mates that may nip fins or harass them. If keeping more than one clownfish, it is usually best to buy a bonded pair or introduce juveniles carefully in a suitably sized aquarium. In smaller tanks, a single clownfish or established pair is often the safest option.
Because clownfish can claim a section of the tank as their own, provide plenty of hiding places and visual barriers to reduce conflict. In reef aquariums, they are generally compatible with corals and many invertebrates, though they may occasionally host in soft corals or LPS species.
