Catalogued by collectors as L027, Panaque nigrolineatus is one of the celebrated wood-eating plecos — a heavyweight armoured catfish that turns a large aquarium into a proper showpiece. It is a fish bought with the long term in mind, because it grows substantial and lives for many years.
Adults reach somewhere in the region of 30–40 cm, so this is firmly a big-tank species. Remarkably for its size it is peaceful, content to graze the bottom and rasp at submerged wood, which forms a genuine part of its diet alongside other omnivorous fare. With good care it can live around 15 years.
The defining requirement is space and clean, well-oxygenated water: plan on at least 600 litres, with generous driftwood and strong filtration to cope with the waste a wood-grazer produces. It accepts soft to moderately hard water within the listed band, tolerating hardness from 0 to 15 dGH and warmth of 25 to 29°C, which is at the upper end and worth maintaining steadily.
People often ask what an L027 actually eats, and the answer shapes the whole setup: submerged wood is not optional decoration but part of its diet as a wood-grazing detritivore. Provide that, along with the room to grow towards 30 to 40 cm, and this is a peaceful giant that can share decades with you, with a potential lifespan of around fifteen years.
Despite its bulk it mixes well with peaceful midwater fish such as tetras, rasboras and corydoras, other peaceful South American community fish, and non-aggressive cichlids of suitable size. Avoid aggressive or territorial fish, large predators, fin-nippers, very small fish that may be outcompeted for food, and other large wood-grazing plecos in undersized tanks. Its peaceful nature means it rarely causes trouble itself, so the main planning challenge is simply giving it the volume and driftwood a fish of this size demands.
