Few aquarium choices are simpler than a mixed goldfish selection. "Mixed" here means assorted Carassius auratus — colours and forms vary from fish to fish, which is half the appeal for keepers who enjoy variety without picking specimens one by one. What never varies is the constitution underneath: an easy-care, peaceful cold-water fish with real staying power, living around ten years and capable of reaching 25 cm at full size. For a first serious cold-water tank, that combination of hardiness and unpredictable colour takes a lot of beating.
That adult size is the number to respect. Allow at least 120 litres of cool water between 15 and 25 °C, with pH 6.5–8.0 and hardness of 10–30 dGH. Goldfish use the whole aquarium rather than one layer, so prioritise open swimming room over dense decoration, and cater for an omnivore's varied diet when you plan feeding.
