Spiny Eels: Macrognathus & Mastacembelus

Peacock and Half-Banded offers sit alongside Fire, Tire Track and other spiny eels in this established range. These names do not describe one adult size. Compare the exact scientific identity, adult dimensions and usable floor space before choosing. Two differently titled offers may name the same species; compare their supplied sizes and sale details rather than treating the names as a size guarantee.

Use suitable smooth substrate for the selected eel and stable hiding places that cannot shift onto a burrowing fish. Check the lid, pipework and cable openings before arrival, and make inspection and maintenance possible without leaving gaps. A small amount of cover in a tall aquarium cannot replace usable floor space for an adult eel.

Ask which foods the current fish accepts and arrange feeding so that it can reach them before quicker residents do. Avoid companions small enough for the selected eel to swallow, including small fish and shrimp. A general peaceful label is not protection from predation. Keep the different species’ feeding and adult-housing needs separate when comparing the offers.
