Collectors of Lake Tanganyika cichlids tend to keep a mental shortlist of locality forms worth waiting for, and the Kigoma-locality Furcifer (Cyathopharynx furcifer kigoma) sits high on it. This is a genuinely large cichlid — around 25 cm when fully grown — and it holds the middle of the water column rather than hugging the rockwork, which gives a tall, roomy Tanganyikan aquarium a centrepiece that is always on display.
Feeding sets this fish apart from much of its lake company. Choose companions from other Lake Tanganyika cichlids of similar size and temperament — robust fish that neither bully nor get bullied. Leave out small species that could be harassed or eaten, highly aggressive territorial cichlids, fin-nippers, soft-water community fish and anything very timid.
