Cichlids are one of the most diverse fish families in the hobby. From tiny apistogrammas to massive oscars, this guide covers the basics of keeping them well.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Port Acara Brown Cichlid is a hardy New World cichlid with quieter colour, strong pair behaviour and a useful tolerance of slightly cooler tropical conditions.
Use a mature aquarium with sand or fine gravel, roots, rocks, open swimming room and broken sight lines. It is more manageable than many large Central American cichlids, but breeding pairs still defend territory.
Choose calm robust companions that will not crowd a pair: larger tetras, peaceful catfish and similarly sized cichlids only where space allows. Avoid tiny fish, fin nippers and cramped mixed-cichlid tanks.
Eligible livestock orders are covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee and are sent with a licensed live-animal courier when available.
