Overview

Protomelas boadzulu is a beautiful Lake Malawi cichlid prized for its elegant body shape, active swimming style and the colour development males can show as they mature. Offered here at 3–4 cm, these juveniles are ideal for aquarists looking to grow on a group and enjoy the full transformation into adult colouration over time. Like many Malawi haps, this species is best kept in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of open swimming room.

Although young fish may appear understated, adult males can develop impressive blue, red and metallic tones depending on lineage, diet, water quality and social dynamics. Females and juveniles are usually more subdued in colour, but still make attractive, active additions to a carefully planned Malawi setup. This species is best suited to keepers with some cichlid experience, as it thrives in a structured environment with compatible tank mates and a sensible stocking plan.

At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy live fish with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new cichlids arrive in excellent condition and ready to settle into their new home.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Protomelas boadzulu originates from Lake Malawi in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous rift lakes and home to an extraordinary diversity of cichlids. In the wild, Protomelas species are typically associated with rocky shorelines, transitional zones and open-water areas near structure, where they browse, forage and establish territories. The lake’s water is naturally hard, alkaline and highly stable, and these conditions should be replicated as closely as possible in the aquarium.

As with many Malawi cichlids, this species has evolved in a highly competitive environment. That means it is active, alert and socially complex, with males often becoming more territorial as they mature. A well-designed aquarium with rockwork, open swimming space and consistent water quality will help bring out the best in their behaviour and colour.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

For long-term success, house Protomelas boadzulu in a spacious aquarium of at least 250 litres, with larger tanks strongly recommended if keeping a group or mixed Malawi community. These fish appreciate open water for swimming, but also need secure rock formations to break sight lines and provide territories. Use stable, stacked rockwork to create caves and barriers, while leaving plenty of clear space at the front and centre of the tank.

Filtration should be powerful and efficient, as Malawi cichlids produce a fair amount of waste and prefer pristine water. Aim for strong circulation and regular maintenance, including weekly water changes of around 25–40% depending on stocking levels. A sandy substrate is ideal, as it is gentle on the fish and suits the natural lake aesthetic. Avoid sharp décor that could damage fins during chasing or territorial displays.

Recommended water parameters are:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • pH: 7.8–8.6
  • General hardness: hard, alkaline water

Stable conditions matter more than chasing exact numbers, but the aquarium should always remain clean, oxygen-rich and well buffered. Because these fish are sold at 3–4 cm, they are still growing and should be fed carefully while maintaining excellent water quality. If you are growing them on from juveniles, plan ahead for adult size and social behaviour so you can avoid overcrowding later.

Feeding Guide

Protomelas boadzulu is an omnivorous Malawi cichlid and should be fed a varied diet based on high-quality prepared foods. Good staples include cichlid pellets or granules designed for African cichlids, along with occasional frozen or live foods such as mysis, krill, daphnia and brine shrimp. A varied diet helps support growth, immune health and strong colour development.

Feed small portions once or twice daily, offering only what the fish can consume in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding can quickly lead to poor water quality and digestive issues. While these fish are not strict herbivores, it is wise to avoid overly rich, fatty foods and to include some plant-based content in the diet where appropriate. For juveniles, use suitably sized foods and ensure they are getting enough nutrition without bloating the tank.

As the fish mature, a balanced feeding routine will help males develop their best colours and body condition. Good water quality and a sensible diet go hand in hand for long-term success.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

This species is best kept with other Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament. Suitable companions include other peaceful to semi-aggressive haps and peacocks, provided the tank is large enough and the stocking plan is carefully balanced. In many setups, keeping a group of juveniles and allowing them to grow out together can work well, but adult males may become territorial, so tank size and aquascape are important.

Good tank mates include robust African cichlids that enjoy similar water conditions and can hold their own without being overly aggressive. Avoid housing Protomelas boadzulu with small, timid fish, slow-moving species, or fish that require soft, acidic water. Very aggressive Mbuna can also be problematic unless the aquarium is large and the aquascape is designed to reduce conflict. As always with Malawi cichlids, overstocking in a planned way can sometimes help spread aggression, but only if filtration and tank volume are sufficient.

Because this is a juvenile fish, it may appear peaceful at first, but adult behaviour should be considered from the outset. Plan for the adult fish, not just the current size.
