Haplochromis nyerei
A colourful Lake Victoria cichlid with lively behaviour and great display potential. Ideal for specialist African cichlid setups.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Haplochromis nyerei is a beautiful Lake Victoria cichlid, often known as Nyerere's cichlid. Offered here at 3-4 cm, these juveniles are a superb choice for aquarists looking to grow out a classic East African species into a vibrant adult display fish. Males develop especially intense colouration as they mature, while females are typically more subdued, making this species rewarding to keep and observe over time.
This is a species best suited to aquarists with some experience of African cichlids, as it thrives in stable, mineral-rich water and benefits from thoughtful tank planning. In the right environment, Haplochromis nyerei is active, engaging and full of personality. It is not a community fish in the usual sense, but it can be kept successfully with compatible Lake Victoria or similarly sized African species.
At Tropical Fish Co, we select healthy stock and pack carefully for dispatch, with fast UK delivery and a live arrival guarantee for peace of mind.

Haplochromis nyerei originates from Lake Victoria in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous cichlid habitats. Lake Victoria’s waters are warm, alkaline and mineral-rich, with rocky shorelines, sandy areas and patches of vegetation creating a complex environment for cichlids to feed, breed and establish territories.
Like many Lake Victoria haplochromines, this species is adapted to a highly competitive ecosystem. In the wild, it occupies a niche where quick movement, visual signalling and territorial behaviour all play a role. That natural history is reflected in the aquarium, where males may display and defend areas, particularly as they mature.
Because of its origin, this fish does best in water that is clean, stable and well oxygenated, with a hard, alkaline profile. It is not a species for soft, acidic community tanks.
A well-planned African cichlid aquarium is the best way to keep Haplochromis nyerei in top condition. A tank of 180 litres or more is recommended for a small group, with extra space always improving stability and reducing aggression. A longer footprint is preferable to give fish room to establish territories and retreat from one another.
Use a sandy substrate or fine gravel and add rockwork to create broken lines of sight. Caves, crevices and stacked stonework help reduce stress and provide visual barriers. Avoid sharp décor and unstable rock arrangements. Hardy plants can be used if protected, but many keepers prefer a rock-focused layout that reflects the species’ natural habitat.
Strong filtration is important, as cichlids are active and produce a moderate waste load. Aim for excellent water movement and regular maintenance. Weekly water changes of 25-40% are usually beneficial, depending on stocking levels and filtration capacity. Keep water parameters consistent rather than chasing exact numbers.
Recommended water range: 22-28°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hardness 10-25 dGH. Slightly warmer water can encourage activity and feeding, while stable alkaline conditions support long-term health. Good aeration is also a plus, especially in heavily stocked African cichlid systems.
In nature, Lake Victoria haplochromines feed on small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny food items. In the aquarium, Haplochromis nyerei should be offered a varied diet based on quality cichlid pellets or granules, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mysis and bloodworm in moderation.
Because this species is not a strict herbivore, it benefits from protein-rich foods, but overfeeding fatty foods can cause digestive issues. Feed small portions once or twice daily, only what the fish will consume quickly. A varied diet helps enhance colour, condition and breeding readiness.
Occasional vegetable matter is useful as part of a balanced diet, but this fish should not be treated like a mbuna that requires a largely plant-based menu. A quality omnivorous cichlid diet is the safest starting point.
Haplochromis nyerei is best kept with other African cichlids of similar size and temperament, ideally from Lake Victoria or from carefully chosen Tanganyika and Malawi species that prefer comparable water conditions and are not overly aggressive. The key is to avoid fish that are either too timid or too dominant.
Good tank mates include robust, similarly sized cichlids, selected catfish that tolerate hard alkaline water, and other species that occupy different areas of the tank. In a species tank, a group of juveniles can be grown on with careful observation, then paired or stocked according to adult behaviour.
Avoid small community fish, very peaceful species, and highly aggressive cichlids that may bully or outcompete H. nyerei. Also avoid soft-water fish, as they will not thrive in the same conditions. As with many cichlids, individual temperament can vary, so tank layout and stocking density matter.
For best results, introduce fish of similar size and monitor behaviour closely during acclimation. Plenty of rockwork and broken sight lines will help reduce chasing and territorial disputes.
