Appearance

The Stone Loach typically reaches around 8 cm in total length, making it a small to medium-sized loach. The body is elongated and cylindrical, with a mottled brown, grey, and olive coloration that provides excellent camouflage against a gravelly substrate. The underside is pale. The mouth is surrounded by barbels, which the fish uses to locate food among stones and gravel. Healthy specimens have bright, alert eyes and smooth, unblemished skin.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Barbatula barbatula inhabits cool, fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers across Europe. These waters are highly oxygenated, with gravelly or stony substrates and strong currents.
