Stone Loach (Barbatula barbatula) is a hardy but specialized cool-water bottom dweller that thrives in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated aquariums with gravel and stones. Native to Europe, especially cool, fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers, this species is prized for its unique adaptations, peaceful nature, and fascinating natural behaviors. Now available for sale UK from Tropical Fish Co, the Stone Loach is ideal for the specialist keeper maintaining a cool-water or temperate aquarium.
The Stone Loach typically reaches around 8 cm in total length, making it a small to medium-sized loach. The body is elongated and cylindrical, with a mottled brown, grey, and olive coloration that provides excellent camouflage against a gravelly substrate. The underside is pale. The mouth is surrounded by barbels, which the fish uses to locate food among stones and gravel. Healthy specimens have bright, alert eyes and smooth, unblemished skin.
In the wild, Barbatula barbatula inhabits cool, fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers across Europe. These waters are highly oxygenated, with gravelly or stony substrates and strong currents. The fish spend much of their time hiding among stones and foraging for benthic invertebrates. Water temperatures are cool year-round, rarely exceeding 20°C, and the habitat is typically clean and unpolluted.
A specialized aquarium of at least 100 litres is recommended for a small group of Stone Loaches. Use a substrate of fine gravel, sand, and rounded stones to replicate their natural habitat, and incorporate driftwood and robust plants such as Vallisneria or Java fern. Ensure strong filtration and good water movement to maintain high oxygen levels. A secure lid is advisable, though loaches are generally less inclined to jump than cyprinids. Maintain cool water temperatures and avoid sharp decorations that could damage the fish's delicate skin.
The Stone Loach is an omnivore and benthic invertivore, feeding primarily on small live and frozen foods. Offer bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and other benthic invertebrates daily, supplemented with quality sinking carnivore pellets or wafers. This species will also graze on biofilm and microorganisms growing on surfaces. Feed once or twice daily in small amounts to maintain excellent water quality.
This loach is peaceful, retiring, and best kept in a small group, where individuals will feel more secure and display natural behavior. They spend much of their time foraging on the substrate and hiding among stones, and are most active during dawn and dusk. Males may engage in mild displays, but serious aggression is rare. Due to their cool-water requirements, they are not suitable for tropical community aquariums.
The Stone Loach is suitable for a cool-water or temperate community aquarium with other peaceful fish. Good tankmates include other cool-water, peaceful fish of similar size, small minnows and dace, white cloud mountain minnows, other non-aggressive bottom dwellers of similar size, and freshwater snails. Avoid large predatory fish, aggressive territorial fish, tropical species requiring warm water, fin-nippers, and very delicate slow-moving fish that may be outcompeted for food.
Breeding the Stone Loach is uncommon in home aquaria and usually requires cool, well-oxygenated water with strong current and a natural seasonal temperature change. Eggs are typically scattered among gravel and stones, and breeding success is rare in captivity.
