Firemouth Cichlid (Cichlasoma meeki)
23–30°C · pH 6.5–8 · 200L

A heavily pearled Herichthys carpintis for large hard-water cichlid aquariums. Best for experienced keepers who can provide space and careful tank mates.
Adult size is the maximum length this species reaches at full maturity (scientific sources). The livestock you receive will be younger and smaller — pick a size variant above for the actual shipping size. Photos are AI-enhanced, so the animal may show subtle colour or marking differences.

The Pearlscale Texas Cichlid, Herichthys carpintis, is a heavily pearled Central American cichlid for keepers with a large, mature aquarium. It is also traded as Pearlscale Cichlid, Green Texas Cichlid and Escondido Lowland Cichlid. The appeal is obvious: metallic blue-green spotting, a powerful body shape and the kind of confident behaviour that makes one fish feel like the centrepiece of the room.
This is not a peaceful community fish. Juveniles can look manageable, but adults become territorial and need space, strong filtration and tank mates chosen with care. If you can provide that, Herichthys carpintis is hardy, responsive and very rewarding to keep.
Plan the aquarium around the adult fish rather than the size it arrives at. A single Pearlscale Texas Cichlid needs a spacious footprint, stable hard-water conditions and enough structure to break line of sight. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, keep nitrate under control with regular water changes, and avoid soft acidic setups where the fish may look washed out or unsettled.
A good everyday range is 24-26C, pH 7.0-8.5 and 8-25 dGH. Strong external filtration is recommended because large cichlids eat heavily and produce real waste. Sand or smooth gravel works well, with rocks and wood secured so they cannot collapse if the fish digs around them.
Feed a varied omnivore diet. Use a quality cichlid pellet as the staple, then rotate frozen mysis, krill, bloodworm for smaller fish, chopped seafood and occasional vegetable foods such as shelled peas or blanched greens. Two measured feeds a day are enough for most growing fish; adults often do better on controlled portions than constant rich food.
The behaviour is part of the attraction. Herichthys carpintis patrols, rearranges substrate and quickly learns feeding routines. During maturity or pair formation it can claim a cave, rock or open patch of aquarium as territory, so leave swimming room and use decor to create clear boundaries.
Choose tank mates only if the aquarium is large enough. Suitable companions are usually robust cichlids or large catfish that are too big to be bullied and not delicate in their own right. Avoid small tetras, guppies, shrimp, dwarf cichlids and slow ornamental fish. A bonded pair can be impressive, but pairing should be watched carefully because aggression can rise quickly.
For similar display fish, compare the Firemouth Cichlid, Electric Blue Acara, T-Bar Cichlid and Red Oscar. If you want another Texas-type option, the Short Body Texas Cichlid is worth checking separately.
