Betta splendens
Striking female Koi Plakat Betta with bold marbling, compact fins and lively personality. A colourful centrepiece for nano and planted tanks.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Female Koi Plakat Betta (Betta splendens) is a stunning, short-finned variety prized for its vivid marbled patterning, compact body shape and engaging personality. The “koi” colour form typically displays a mix of white, orange, red and black, with each fish showing a unique pattern. As a female plakat, this fish has shorter fins than long-finned bettas, giving it a neat, athletic appearance and making it a practical choice for aquarists who want beauty without the heavy finnage of showier strains.
Females are often a little more active and can be less prone to fin damage than long-finned males, but they still need the same warm, stable water and peaceful surroundings. This is an ideal fish for a well-planted aquarium where it can explore, rest among leaves and display natural behaviour. With proper care, a female Koi Plakat Betta can become a confident, interactive pet that quickly recognises its keeper.
At Tropical Fish Co, we select healthy live fish and pack them with care for fast UK delivery. Every order is backed by our live arrival guarantee, so you can buy with confidence.

Betta splendens originates from Thailand and neighbouring parts of mainland South-East Asia, where it inhabits warm, shallow waters such as rice paddies, ditches, slow streams, floodplains and marshes. These environments are often calm, densely vegetated and low in dissolved oxygen, which is why bettas have evolved the labyrinth organ — a specialised breathing structure that allows them to take in atmospheric air from the surface.
In the wild, bettas spend much of their time weaving through plants, resting near cover and feeding on tiny aquatic invertebrates. This natural history explains why they do best in aquariums that provide gentle flow, plenty of hiding places and easy access to the surface. While domestic koi plakat bettas are selectively bred for colour and form, their care requirements remain closely tied to the species’ natural habitat.
A single female Koi Plakat Betta should be kept in a heated, filtered aquarium of at least 40 litres, though larger is always better. A mature, stable tank is essential. Bettas are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality, so regular maintenance and careful acclimation are important. Use a lid or cover, as bettas can jump, and ensure there is a small gap at the surface for air access.
Choose a gentle filter with a low flow rate; strong currents can exhaust a betta and make it difficult for her to swim comfortably. Live plants such as Anubias, Java fern, Cryptocoryne and floating plants are excellent additions, offering cover and helping to create a calm, natural environment. Smooth décor is best, as sharp ornaments can tear delicate fins even on a plakat variety.
Recommended water conditions are 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, with stable, clean water and low ammonia and nitrite. Bettas appreciate soft to moderately hard water, but consistency matters more than chasing exact numbers. Perform partial water changes weekly and keep the tank cycled before introducing the fish. A heater is strongly recommended in the UK, as room temperatures are usually too cool for long-term betta health.
Because this is a live tropical fish, we ship with care and support safe arrival. Our packaging and dispatch process is designed for fast UK delivery, helping your fish arrive in excellent condition under our live arrival guarantee.
Female Koi Plakat Bettas are carnivore-leaning omnivores and thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. Offer a quality betta pellet or micro pellet as the staple food, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Variety supports colour, condition and natural behaviour.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only what the fish can consume in a minute or two. Overfeeding is a common mistake and can lead to bloating, poor water quality and long-term health issues. Occasional fasting days can be beneficial, especially for adult fish, but do not overdo it. Remove uneaten food promptly to keep the aquarium clean.
Female bettas can sometimes be kept with carefully chosen peaceful tank mates, but success depends on the individual fish, tank size and aquascape. A heavily planted aquarium with broken lines of sight is best. Avoid housing with fin-nippers, boisterous species, or fish that resemble another betta and may trigger territorial behaviour.
Good companions may include small, calm fish such as ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, celestial pearl danios, pygmy corydoras and peaceful snails or shrimp in larger, well-structured tanks. Always monitor introductions closely and be prepared to separate fish if chasing or stress occurs. Some female bettas are perfectly peaceful, while others are more assertive, so individual temperament matters.
Do not keep with male bettas, aggressive cichlids, tiger barbs, large gouramis, or any species that may nip fins or outcompete the betta for food. If you are new to betta keeping, a species-only setup is often the safest and most rewarding option.
