A planted tank works in layers: carpeting species like Eleocharis and Micranthemum at the front, stem plants like Rotala, Ludwigia and Hygrophila through the midground, and larger Echinodorus swords or Crinum at the back. Epiphytes — Anubias, Java Fern and Bucephalandra — attach to wood or rock rather than the substrate, which makes them the easiest plants of all to place.

Frequently asked questions

Anubias, Java Fern, Cryptocoryne and aquarium mosses are the classic starting points — they tolerate modest light, need no CO2 injection and forgive missed fertiliser doses. Anubias and Java Fern attach to wood or rock rather than needing substrate, so they are also the easiest to place. Check each listing for the plant's light and care notes before ordering.
Tropica's 1-2-Grow range is grown sterile in a laboratory and sold in sealed cups. Because nothing else lives in the cup, the plants arrive free of snails, algae and pesticide residue, which makes them the safest choice for shrimp tanks. Rinse the growing gel off, split the cup into smaller portions and plant each one separately — a single cup usually yields several plantlets.
Many don't. Epiphytes like Anubias and Java Fern, Cryptocoryne species and most mosses grow steadily in an ordinary low-tech tank with decent lighting and a liquid fertiliser. CO2 injection speeds up growth and is what dense carpets and strongly coloured stem plants respond to, but it's an upgrade for ambitious aquascapes rather than a requirement for an easy planted tank.
Don't bury them. Both are epiphytes — the thick horizontal rhizome must stay above the substrate or it can rot. Tie or glue the rhizome to driftwood or rock, wedge it into a crevice, or use a plant clip; the roots will grip the surface on their own over the following weeks. Yes — live plants absorb nitrate and other waste compounds, add oxygen during the day, give shy fish and fry real cover, provide grazing surfaces for shrimp, and compete with algae for nutrients. A well-planted tank is more stable and closer to the environment most tropical species evolved in, which is why planted-tank fish show noticeably better colour and behaviour.
