Danio malabaricus
A lively, orange form of the Giant Danio — hardy, fast-swimming and ideal for spacious community tanks.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Orange Giant Danio (Danio malabaricus) is a striking, energetic schooling fish that brings constant movement and colour to the upper and middle levels of the aquarium. This orange colour form of the Giant Danio is a great choice for aquarists who want a hardy, active species with plenty of personality. At 4-5 cm, these fish are still juveniles and will continue to grow into impressive, streamlined adults.
Giant Danios are known for their resilience, adaptability and lively nature, making them a popular option for larger community aquariums. They are best kept in groups, where their natural shoaling behaviour can be observed as they dart, play and interact throughout the day. While peaceful, they are very active swimmers and need room to move, so they are most suitable for medium to large tanks with good filtration and open swimming space.
As with all live fish from Tropical Fish Co, your order is covered by our live arrival guarantee and sent with fast UK delivery, helping ensure your new fish arrive in excellent condition and ready to settle into their new home.

Danio malabaricus is native to parts of India, particularly the Western Ghats region, where it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams, rivers and pools. In the wild, Giant Danios are found in flowing waters with plenty of dissolved oxygen, moderate current and natural cover from rocks, roots and marginal vegetation. Their body shape and swimming style reflect this environment: they are built for speed, endurance and constant movement.
The orange colour form offered here is a selectively bred aquarium variety, but its care requirements remain very similar to the natural species. Understanding its riverine origins is key to keeping it well: these fish thrive in clean water, strong circulation and a tank layout that provides open swimming lanes alongside sheltered areas.
Because Giant Danios are energetic and can grow to a substantial size, they should be housed in a spacious aquarium with plenty of horizontal swimming room. A tank of 120 litres is the minimum recommended for a small group, but larger is always better. A longer tank is preferable to a tall one, as these fish spend much of their time cruising back and forth through the water column.
Provide a secure lid, as Giant Danios are powerful swimmers and may jump when startled. Use a good-quality filter that creates steady water movement and maintains high oxygen levels. Live plants, driftwood and rocks can be used to break up sight lines, but leave open areas in the centre and upper levels for schooling behaviour. A dark substrate and natural planting can help the orange colour stand out beautifully.
Water should be kept clean and stable, with regular maintenance and partial water changes. Aim for a temperature of 22-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5 and moderate hardness. They are not especially delicate, but they do best in mature aquariums with consistent water quality. Avoid overcrowding and ensure the tank is not too warm, as prolonged high temperatures can reduce oxygen availability and increase stress.
Orange Giant Danios are omnivorous and will readily accept a wide variety of foods. A balanced diet should include quality flake or micro pellet as a staple, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. Vegetable matter is also beneficial, so occasional feeds of spirulina-based foods or blanched greens can help provide dietary variety.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, offering only what the fish can consume within a few minutes. These fish are fast and enthusiastic feeders, so make sure slower tank mates are not outcompeted. A varied diet will support strong colouration, healthy growth and active behaviour.
Orange Giant Danios are generally peaceful, but their speed and size mean they are best paired with similarly robust, non-aggressive fish. Good tank mates include medium-sized barbs, rainbowfish, larger rasboras, peaceful loaches, Corydoras, bristlenose plecs and other active community species. They also do well with similarly sized livebearers in suitably spacious setups.
Avoid keeping them with very small fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted at feeding time, as well as long-finned species that may be stressed by the danios' energetic swimming. Fin-nipping is not usually a major issue with this species, but cramped conditions or too few individuals can increase boisterous behaviour. They should always be kept in a group of at least 6, with 8 or more being ideal for natural shoaling and reduced nervousness.
In mixed communities, choose tank mates that appreciate similar water conditions and plenty of space. A well-planned aquarium will allow Giant Danios to occupy the upper water layers while other species use the middle and bottom regions, creating a balanced and active display.
