Overview

The Red Rosy Barb (Puntius conchonius), also widely sold under the older name Barbus conchonius, is a classic community fish prized for its hardiness, movement and attractive red colouration. At 3.5-4 cm, these juveniles are a great size for establishing a shoal in a well-planned aquarium, and they will continue to develop stronger colour as they settle in, especially males. Their energetic nature makes them a lively focal point in a mixed tropical setup, while their generally peaceful temperament means they can fit into many community tanks when kept in suitable groups.

Rosy Barbs are one of the best choices for aquarists looking for a fish that is forgiving, adaptable and rewarding to keep. They are active swimmers, enjoy company of their own kind, and do best when kept in a proper shoal. With good water quality, a balanced diet and enough swimming space, they can thrive for many years. All fish are supplied with our live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery for peace of mind when ordering online.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Red Rosy Barbs originate from South Asia, particularly parts of India and surrounding regions, where they inhabit slow-moving rivers, ponds, lakes and floodplain waters. In nature they are found in warm, often well-vegetated waters with plenty of room to swim and forage. Their natural environment can vary seasonally, which helps explain why they are so adaptable in the aquarium. They are not overly specialised fish, but they do appreciate stable conditions and a tank that provides both open swimming space and some planted cover.

In the wild, Rosy Barbs feed opportunistically on small invertebrates, plant matter, algae and detritus. This varied diet is reflected in their easy-going feeding requirements in captivity. Their adaptability is one reason they have remained popular with aquarists for decades.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A spacious aquarium is important for Red Rosy Barbs because they are active and best kept in groups. A minimum of 120 litres is recommended for a proper shoal, with a longer tank preferred over a tall one to give them room to cruise. A group of six or more is ideal, as this helps spread any chasing and encourages natural behaviour. Males may show brighter red colouration and can display mild sparring, but this is usually harmless when the group is large enough.

Provide a mix of open swimming areas and planted sections. Hardy plants such as Vallisneria, Cryptocoryne, Java fern and Anubias work well, and floating plants can help soften the lighting if desired. A dark substrate and background can also enhance their red tones. Filtration should be efficient, but avoid excessive current; these fish appreciate clean, oxygenated water without being forced into a strong flow.

Recommended water parameters are a temperature of 18-26°C, with 22-24°C being a comfortable everyday range for most community setups. Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, with stable conditions more important than chasing exact numbers. They are generally tolerant of a range of hardness levels, provided changes are gradual and the aquarium is well maintained. Regular partial water changes are essential, especially in a busy community tank.

When acclimating new fish, take your time. Float the bag, then gradually mix tank water over 20-30 minutes before release. This helps reduce stress and supports a smoother transition. As with all livestock, we recommend checking your aquarium is fully cycled before adding fish.

Feeding Guide

Red Rosy Barbs are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet to keep them healthy and colourful. A quality tropical flake or small pellet can form the staple, supplemented several times a week with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Vegetable matter is also beneficial, so include spirulina-based foods, blanched spinach or algae wafers in moderation.

Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what the fish can consume in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding can quickly affect water quality, especially in active community tanks. A varied diet helps support growth, colour and breeding condition, while also reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Red Rosy Barbs are best kept with other peaceful, similarly sized fish that can handle their energetic nature. Good companions include danios, rasboras, larger tetras, rainbowfish, Corydoras, peaceful loaches and other non-aggressive community species. They also work well with robust livebearers in suitably sized aquariums.

Although they are usually peaceful, they can become nippy if kept in too small a group or in cramped conditions. For that reason, avoid very slow-moving fish with long fins such as bettas, fancy guppies with elaborate tails, angelfish in smaller tanks, and delicate species that may be stressed by constant activity. Tiny fry and very small shrimp may also be at risk, as Rosy Barbs are opportunistic feeders.

Keeping them in a proper shoal is the best way to encourage natural behaviour and reduce any fin-nipping tendencies. A larger tank with plenty of swimming room will always produce the best results.
