Puntius conchonius is native to South Asia, particularly parts of India, Bangladesh and surrounding regions. In the wild, Rosy Barbs inhabit slow-moving rivers, streams, ponds and floodplain waters, often where vegetation provides cover and the water flow is gentle. These habitats can vary seasonally, which helps explain why the species is so adaptable in captivity.
As a shoaling fish, the Rosy Barb naturally lives in groups and uses the safety of numbers to feel secure. In the aquarium, this social behaviour is important: keeping them in a proper group reduces stress, encourages natural interaction and helps prevent nippy behaviour that can occur when they are kept singly or in too-small numbers.
Orange Rosy Barbs are best kept in a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room. Although they are hardy, they thrive when given a well-planted tank with open areas for movement. A longer tank is preferable to a tall one, as these fish are active swimmers and appreciate room to cruise through the middle levels of the aquarium.
Use a soft to moderate water flow and provide a secure lid, as Rosy Barbs can be surprisingly energetic. Plants such as Vallisneria, Java fern, Cryptocoryne and floating species can help create a natural look while still leaving open space. Driftwood and smooth rockwork can also be used to break up sight lines and give the fish places to explore.
Recommended water conditions are a temperature of 18-24°C, pH 6.0-7.5 and stable, clean water with regular maintenance. They are tolerant of a range of conditions, but like all fish, they do best in mature aquariums with good filtration and consistent water quality. Weekly partial water changes are strongly recommended to keep nitrate levels low and support long-term health.
Because they are active and social, Rosy Barbs should be kept in a group of at least six, with more being even better if tank space allows. This spreads out any playful chasing and helps the fish feel secure. A 120-litre aquarium is the minimum recommended size for a proper group, though larger tanks are always preferable.
Orange Rosy Barbs are omnivores and are not fussy eaters. A varied diet will keep them in good condition and help maintain their colour. Offer a quality tropical flake or small pellet as the staple food, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Vegetable matter is also beneficial, so include foods with spirulina or occasional blanched greens.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as the fish can consume in a few minutes. Overfeeding should be avoided, as it can quickly affect water quality. A balanced diet not only supports growth and vitality, but also helps bring out the best orange and rosy tones in this attractive variety.
Rosy Barbs are generally peaceful, but they are active and can become boisterous if kept in too small a group or with very slow, long-finned tank mates. They are best suited to similarly sized, robust community fish that can handle a bit of movement. Good companions include danios, rasboras, rainbowfish, Corydoras, loaches and other peaceful barbs of comparable size.
Avoid keeping them with delicate species, very slow swimmers, or fish with long flowing fins such as bettas, fancy guppies, angelfish and some gouramis, as Rosy Barbs may nip fins if under-stimulated or crowded. They are also not ideal with tiny fry or very small shrimp, which may be seen as food.
For the best results, provide plenty of space, keep them in a proper shoal and choose tank mates that match their energy level. When housed appropriately, they make excellent community fish and are a pleasure to watch.
