Betta splendens
A striking XL male Elephant Ear Betta with oversized fins and bold colour.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Elephant Ear Betta, also sold as a Big Ear Betta, is a spectacular variety of Betta splendens prized for its enlarged pectoral fins and elegant, flowing appearance. This XL male makes a dramatic centrepiece fish for a carefully planned aquarium, combining vivid colour, personality and a truly unique fin shape. As with all bettas, each fish has its own character: some are bold and interactive, while others are more reserved and prefer a calm environment.
Although hardy compared with many ornamental fish, Elephant Ear Bettas do best when kept in warm, clean, stable water with gentle filtration and plenty of resting spots near the surface. Their long fins can make them less agile than short-finned fish, so aquascaping should prioritise easy swimming routes and low-stress conditions. With the right care, they can thrive and display their best colours and finnage for years.
At Tropical Fish Co, we select healthy livestock and pack with care for fast UK delivery. Every live fish order is covered by our live arrival guarantee, giving you confidence when buying online.

Betta splendens originates from the warm, slow-moving waters of Thailand and neighbouring parts of mainland South-East Asia. In the wild, bettas inhabit rice paddies, shallow marshes, ditches and floodplains where the water is often still, warm and low in oxygen. These environments are rich in insects and small invertebrates, which explains the species’ preference for protein-rich foods.
Modern Elephant Ear Bettas are selectively bred aquarium strains, developed for their enlarged pectoral fins and ornamental appeal. While their appearance is very different from wild bettas, their basic care needs remain closely tied to their natural habitat: warm water, gentle flow, and a peaceful setting with access to the surface.
A single male Elephant Ear Betta should be housed in a well-covered aquarium of at least 20 litres, though larger tanks are always better for stability and enrichment. Bettas are excellent jumpers, so a secure lid is essential. Keep the water level a little below the top to allow easy access to the surface, where they breathe air using their labyrinth organ.
Use a gentle filter with a low current, as strong flow can stress long-finned bettas and make swimming tiring. Live plants such as Anubias, Java fern, Cryptocoryne and floating plants are ideal, providing shade, security and resting places. Smooth décor is important; avoid sharp ornaments that could damage delicate fins.
Maintain the temperature between 23 and 27°C, with a stable pH from 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Regular partial water changes are essential to keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrates low. Bettas appreciate a calm aquarium with subdued lighting, open swimming space and a few hiding places. A heater and thermometer are strongly recommended for consistent conditions.
Because this is an ornamental male, do not keep him with other male bettas or aggressive fin-nippers. If you are building a community tank, choose tank mates carefully and make sure the aquarium is large enough to reduce territorial stress.
Elephant Ear Bettas are carnivores and should be fed a varied, protein-rich diet. A high-quality betta pellet can form the staple, but variety is important for long-term health, colour and condition. Offer small portions once or twice daily, only what the fish can consume in a couple of minutes.
Excellent supplementary foods include frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and bloodworm. These foods mimic the natural insect-based diet of bettas and help encourage natural feeding behaviour. Overfeeding should be avoided, as bettas can become bloated and water quality can deteriorate quickly in smaller aquariums.
For best results, rotate foods and include occasional fasting days if needed. Always thaw frozen foods before feeding and remove any uneaten food promptly.
Elephant Ear Bettas are best kept either singly or with carefully chosen peaceful tank mates in a suitably sized aquarium. Suitable companions are usually calm, non-nippy species that do not compete aggressively for food or territory. Avoid fish with long flowing fins, highly active species that may stress the betta, and any known fin-nippers.
Compatibility can vary by individual temperament, so observe introductions closely and be prepared to separate fish if needed. A heavily planted tank with broken lines of sight can help reduce tension. Shrimp and snails may be possible in some setups, though larger or more confident bettas may occasionally investigate or harass very small invertebrates.
For the safest and most stress-free setup, many aquarists choose to keep a male Elephant Ear Betta as a species tank feature fish, allowing its colour, finnage and behaviour to be fully appreciated.
