The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Mustard bettas are named for their signature two-tone look — dark body shading breaking into mustard-yellow fins — and on a halfmoon male the effect is magnified by the tail's huge 180-degree spread. This is one of the most photographed colourways in the hobby for good reason: when a Halfmoon Mustard flares, the contrast between body and finnage is hard to beat. Our males arrive at around 6.5 cm.
Beneath the glamour sits a fighter. The record lists him as aggressive and the keeping advice is simple: best kept alone. Snails are tolerated, and some peaceful shrimp may survive alongside him though they may be eaten. Everything else on the caution list stays out — other male bettas above all, plus fin-nippers, aggressive or territorial species, large predators, and brightly coloured or long-finned fish that read as rivals. Those enormous fins also shape his environment: gentle filtration, resting spots near the surface, and no sharp decor that could tear a halfmoon tail. He lives in the top region of the tank and needs 38 litres or more, heated to 24–30 °C with pH 6.0–7.5 and hardness from 1 to 15 dGH. Expect heightened territoriality if he comes into breeding condition.
A halfmoon's tail is an investment to protect. Filter outflow should barely ripple the surface of his tank, decor needs a fingertip test for sharp edges before it goes in, and the 38-litre minimum on his record gives him room to carry that spread without constant contact with hardscape. Feed a quality carnivore diet — fin condition reflects nutrition within weeks — and keep the heater inside the 24–30 °C window. Mustard males reward a dark background: the body-to-fin gradient reads far more strongly with contrast behind it. He should reach around three years with stable care, flaring less often as he ages but never quite retiring the display.
Pair him with still water and patience and the halfmoon spread will do the rest — most keepers find a mirror used sparingly brings out the full display for photographs. UK orders are packed insulated, sent by licensed live-animal courier and protected by our live arrival guarantee.
