Betta splendens
XL male crowntail fancy betta with striking colours and dramatic fins.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Crowntail Fancy Male Betta Betta splendens is one of the most eye-catching aquarium fish you can keep, combining intense colouration with the distinctive spiky finnage that gives the crowntail its name. This XL male is a standout specimen, ideal for aquarists looking for a true centrepiece fish with personality, intelligence and flair.
Fancy colour mix bettas can display a wide range of reds, blues, whites, blacks, metallic tones and marbled patterns, making each fish unique. Males are best kept alone or in carefully planned setups, as they are territorial and can be aggressive towards other males and similarly shaped fish. With the right environment, however, they are hardy, interactive and rewarding to keep.
At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy live fish with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new betta arrives in excellent condition and ready to settle into its new home.

Betta splendens originates from Thailand and neighbouring parts of mainland South-East Asia, where it inhabits warm, slow-moving waters such as rice paddies, canals, floodplains, ditches and shallow ponds. These environments are often low in oxygen and densely vegetated, which is why bettas have evolved the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air at the surface.
In the wild, bettas are not found in the bright, open conditions of a bare aquarium. They prefer calm water, cover from plants and roots, and areas where they can rest near the surface. Understanding this natural behaviour is key to keeping a healthy, confident fish in the home aquarium.
A single male crowntail betta should be housed in a heated, filtered aquarium of at least 20 litres, though more space is always beneficial. A longer tank is often preferable to a tall one, as bettas use the upper levels and appreciate easy access to the surface. Gentle filtration is important; strong currents can stress the fish and damage the delicate crowntail fins.
Use a secure lid, as bettas are capable jumpers and also need access to warm, humid air above the water surface. Decor should include live or silk plants, smooth hiding places and resting spots near the top, such as broad leaves or betta hammocks. Avoid sharp ornaments, as crowntail fins are more prone to tearing than those of short-finned fish.
Stable water quality is essential. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and perform regular partial water changes to maintain low nitrate levels. A heater is strongly recommended, as bettas are tropical fish and do best in consistently warm water. Sudden temperature swings should be avoided.
Recommended parameters: temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, with soft to moderately hard water preferred. A mature, cycled aquarium will help reduce stress and support long-term health.
Crowntail bettas are primarily carnivorous and thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. Offer a quality betta pellet or micro pellet as the staple food, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Variety helps maintain colour, condition and appetite.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only what the fish will consume in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is a common mistake and can lead to bloating, poor water quality and obesity. A regular fasting day once a week can be beneficial for some individuals, provided the fish is otherwise healthy.
Because bettas have a relatively small stomach, it is better to feed modestly and consistently rather than offering large meals. Remove any uneaten food promptly.
Male bettas are best kept singly. Their temperament varies from fish to fish, but most males are territorial and may attack other males, fin-nipping species or fish with similar body shapes and flowing fins. Peaceful tank mates can sometimes be kept in larger, carefully aquascaped aquariums, but compatibility is never guaranteed.
Suitable companions, where space and layout allow, may include small, calm species that do not nip fins or compete aggressively at the surface. Even then, close observation is essential. Avoid housing with other male bettas, guppies with long fins, aggressive barbs, large gouramis, or any fish likely to harass or outcompete the betta.
Invertebrates such as larger snails may be tolerated, but shrimp can be viewed as food depending on the individual fish. If you want the safest and most stress-free setup, a species tank is the best option for this beautiful male crowntail.
