Overview

The gold axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is one of the most iconic aquatic amphibians in the hobby, loved for its feathery external gills, permanent juvenile form and calm, characterful behaviour. This striking gold colour morph is especially eye-catching, with pale creamy-gold tones that stand out beautifully against dark substrate and lush planting. At 3-5 cm, these are very young juveniles and will need careful, attentive husbandry as they grow.

Axolotls are not fish, but fully aquatic salamanders that spend their lives in water. They are best suited to dedicated cool-water setups with excellent filtration, stable water quality and plenty of floor space. They are fascinating to watch, often exploring the tank bottom, resting in shaded areas and investigating food with surprising speed when they are hungry. If you are looking for a truly unusual centrepiece animal, the gold axolotl is a superb choice.

We supply healthy livestock with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new axolotl arrives in the best possible condition. Please note that juveniles require extra care, gentle feeding and a mature, cycled aquarium before introduction.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Ambystoma mexicanum is native to the lake system of Xochimilco in Mexico City, where it historically lived among cool, slow-moving freshwater canals and vegetated shallows. In the wild, axolotls are adapted to low-flow environments with soft substrates, hiding places and abundant cover. Their natural habitat has been heavily reduced, which is one reason captive breeding is so important for the species.

Axolotls are famous for neoteny, meaning they retain larval features such as external gills and a fully aquatic lifestyle throughout adulthood. This makes them unique among amphibians and explains their popularity in the aquarium and exotics trade. The gold morph is a captive-bred colour variant, selected for its bright, attractive appearance.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

Axolotls need a cool, stable aquarium with strong biological filtration and low to moderate flow. A mature, fully cycled tank is essential, especially for juveniles. Because they are bottom-dwellers and can ingest substrate while feeding, choose a fine sand substrate or keep the tank bare-bottom for young animals. Avoid gravel and sharp décor.

Provide plenty of hiding places using smooth caves, driftwood, slate, ceramic shelters and live or artificial plants that tolerate cool water. Axolotls appreciate subdued lighting and shaded areas, so floating plants or dim lighting can help reduce stress. A secure lid is recommended, as they can occasionally push upwards or climb decor.

Ideal water conditions are cool and clean: temperature 12-20°C is best, with short periods up to 23°C only if necessary and carefully monitored. pH should remain between 6.5 and 8.0, and moderate hardness is suitable. Ammonia and nitrite must always be zero, and nitrate should be kept as low as possible through regular maintenance and water changes.

Because axolotls produce a significant waste load, filtration should be efficient without creating strong currents. Sponge filters, large external filters with flow reduction, or carefully baffled filtration systems work well. Gentle aeration can also help maintain oxygen levels, especially in warmer weather. Never house axolotls in warm rooms or in direct sunlight, as overheating is a major health risk.

For juveniles like this 3-5 cm specimen, feeding and water quality are especially important. Young axolotls grow quickly, but only if they are kept in pristine conditions and fed appropriately sized foods. Regular small water changes and close observation will help them thrive.

Feeding Guide

Axolotls are carnivores and should be fed a protein-rich diet. In the wild they eat worms, small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other suitably sized prey. In captivity, the best staple foods are earthworms or chopped dendrobaena worms, with high-quality axolotl pellets as a useful supplement. Juveniles may also take small frozen foods such as bloodworm, though worms are generally superior as a staple once they are large enough.

Feed young axolotls small amounts once or twice daily, offering food that is no wider than the space between the eyes. As they grow, feeding can be reduced to every 2-3 days for subadults and adults. Remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality. Avoid feeder fish, as they can introduce disease and are not a suitable staple diet. Also avoid fatty meats, processed foods and anything too large or hard to digest.

Because this is a very small juvenile, live or frozen foods may need to be finely sized. Always supervise feeding and ensure the axolotl is able to swallow safely. A healthy axolotl should have a rounded body without becoming overweight, and its gills should remain full and feathery.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Axolotls are best kept either alone or with very carefully chosen companions in specialist setups. They are peaceful, but they will attempt to eat anything that fits in their mouth, including small fish, shrimp and tiny tank mates. Even larger fish can nip at their gills or stress them with constant movement.

The safest option is a species-only aquarium. If you do choose to keep axolotls with others, the tank must be large, cool and carefully managed, and all companions should be robust enough not to be eaten or injured. In practice, most hobbyists find that a dedicated axolotl tank gives the best results and the least risk.

Never house axolotls with tropical fish, aggressive fish, fin-nippers, crayfish, crabs or any species that requires warm water. Likewise, avoid small shrimp and snails unless you are happy for them to become food. Tank mates should not compete for food or disturb the axolotl’s resting areas.
