Xenotilapia flavipinnis
Elegant Tanganyika sand-sifter cichlid, ideal for hard, alkaline setups with peaceful tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Xenotilapia flavipinnis is a beautiful and distinctive Lake Tanganyika cichlid prized for its slim profile, subtle markings and calm, graceful behaviour. Offered here at 4-5 cm, these juveniles will develop into elegant adults reaching around 12 cm, making them a superb choice for aquarists who want something a little different from the usual African cichlid selection.
Unlike many more boisterous cichlids, Xenotilapia flavipinnis is best known as a sand-associated species that spends much of its time picking through the substrate for tiny food items. In the aquarium, they are most rewarding when kept in a species-appropriate Tanganyika setup with fine sand, open swimming space and stable, hard, alkaline water. They are not ideal for a brand-new aquarium, but in a mature, well-maintained tank they can be fascinating to watch and relatively straightforward to keep.
At Tropical Fish Co, we select and ship healthy livestock with care, backed by our live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery. If you are looking for an authentic Tanganyika species with real character and a refined appearance, this is an excellent choice.

Xenotilapia flavipinnis originates from Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, one of the oldest and most biologically diverse lakes on Earth. This species is adapted to the lake’s clear, mineral-rich waters and sandy or mixed sand habitats. In nature, Xenotilapia species often forage close to the substrate, sifting and picking at tiny invertebrates and organic particles.
The lake’s conditions are very stable compared with many other freshwater environments, which is why these fish do best in aquariums that replicate Tanganyika water chemistry. A high pH, elevated hardness and excellent water quality are essential. Their natural habitat also explains their preference for fine sand rather than coarse gravel, as they use the substrate to forage comfortably and naturally.
For best results, keep Xenotilapia flavipinnis in a mature aquarium of at least 250 litres, with more space preferred if you plan to keep a group. They are social fish and are usually best maintained in a small group or compatible colony, provided the tank is large enough to reduce stress and allow natural behaviour.
A soft, fine sandy substrate is strongly recommended. Avoid sharp gravel, as these fish spend a lot of time close to the bottom and may sift the substrate. Add open swimming areas, a few rock piles or shell-style Tanganyika décor for structure, and keep the layout spacious rather than heavily planted. Plants are not essential and may not suit the hard, alkaline conditions these fish prefer, though hardy species can sometimes be used if desired.
Water quality should be kept excellent with efficient filtration and regular maintenance. Aim for:
Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers. Perform regular partial water changes and avoid sudden swings in temperature or chemistry. Tanganyika cichlids appreciate highly oxygenated water, so good circulation and surface movement are beneficial.
Because this species is relatively slender and can be shy, tank mates should not be overly aggressive or hyperactive. Provide plenty of visual breaks and avoid overcrowding. A calm environment will help them settle, feed confidently and display their best colours.
In the wild, Xenotilapia flavipinnis feeds on tiny benthic organisms and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet based on high-quality, appropriately sized foods. Good options include fine cichlid pellets, small sinking granules, frozen cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp and other small meaty foods.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as they can consume quickly. Overfeeding should be avoided, as it can pollute the water and may cause digestive issues. A varied diet helps maintain condition, colour and breeding readiness. If keeping them with other Tanganyikan species, make sure the food reaches the bottom where these fish can access it without competition from faster feeders.
Xenotilapia flavipinnis is generally peaceful for a cichlid, but it is still a Tanganyika species and should be housed with compatible fish that appreciate similar water conditions. Best companions are calm, non-fin-nipping species that will not outcompete them at feeding time.
Suitable tank mates may include other peaceful Tanganyika cichlids of similar temperament, selected shell dwellers in larger setups, and some robust lake-compatible species that are not overly aggressive. Keep an eye on territorial behaviour, especially during breeding periods, when pairs may become more defensive around their chosen area.
Avoid mixing them with highly aggressive Mbuna, large predatory cichlids, or boisterous species that dominate the tank. Fast, food-greedy fish can also be a poor match because Xenotilapia are more deliberate feeders and may struggle to compete.
When introduced to a suitably planned aquarium, these fish can be a rewarding addition to a Tanganyika community, offering subtle beauty and interesting natural behaviour rather than constant aggression.
