Barbus tetrazona
Striking platinum green Tiger Barb juveniles at 2.5 cm. Hardy, active and ideal for lively community aquariums.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Platinum Green Tiger Barb (Barbus tetrazona) is a dazzling colour form of the classic Tiger Barb, prized for its metallic sheen and energetic personality. At around 2.5 cm, these are young fish with plenty of growing left to do, making them a great choice for aquarists who want to raise a shoal and watch their colours develop. Their reflective platinum-green body catches the light beautifully, giving movement and sparkle to planted or aquascaped tanks.
This is a lively, schooling species that does best in a group of at least six, with larger shoals often showing more natural behaviour and reduced fin-nipping. Tiger Barbs are not ideal for very calm or long-finned tank mates, but in the right setup they are hardy, engaging and full of character. They are suitable for beginners who are happy to provide a properly sized aquarium and a compatible community.
As with all live fish from Tropical Fish Co, your order is backed by our live arrival guarantee and dispatched with fast UK delivery for peace of mind.

The Tiger Barb originates from Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo, Sumatra and surrounding regions, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, forest pools and calm river margins. In the wild, these fish live in groups and spend much of their time weaving through vegetation, submerged roots and leaf litter. Water in these habitats is often warm, slightly acidic to neutral, and shaded by overhanging plants and forest canopy.
The Platinum Green variety is a selectively bred ornamental form rather than a naturally occurring wild type. While its colouration is enhanced for the aquarium trade, its care requirements remain very similar to the standard Tiger Barb. Understanding its natural shoaling behaviour is key to keeping it successfully: these fish are most confident, colourful and active when kept in a proper group.
A spacious aquarium is important for Tiger Barbs because they are fast swimmers and highly social. A minimum of 120 litres is recommended for a shoal, with more room always beneficial if you plan to keep them with other active species. A longer tank is preferable to a tall one, as it gives the fish space to cruise and interact naturally.
Use a secure lid, as Tiger Barbs can be surprisingly quick and may jump when startled. Provide open swimming areas alongside planted sections, driftwood and rocks to break up sight lines. Hardy plants such as Java fern, Anubias and Cryptocoryne work well, and floating plants can help soften the lighting. A dark substrate can enhance the metallic green sheen of the fish and create a more natural look.
Stable water quality is essential. Aim for a temperature of 24–28°C, pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Regular partial water changes will help maintain health and colour. A good external or internal filter with moderate flow is ideal, as the species appreciates clean, oxygenated water without excessive turbulence.
Because these fish are active and can be nippy, avoid overcrowding and provide enough visual breaks in the aquascape. Keeping them in a larger shoal often reduces aggression and encourages more natural behaviour.
Platinum Green Tiger Barbs are omnivores and will accept a wide range of foods. A varied diet helps maintain strong colour, good growth and healthy immune function. Offer a quality tropical flake or micro pellet as the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm.
Small vegetable-based foods and blanched greens can also be offered occasionally to balance the diet. Feed little and often, only what the fish can consume in a few minutes, as overfeeding can quickly affect water quality. Juveniles at 2.5 cm will benefit from smaller food particles and regular feeding while they grow.
Tiger Barbs are best kept with robust, similarly active fish that can handle their energetic nature. Good companions include larger danios, rainbowfish, rasboras of similar size, Corydoras catfish, bristlenose plecs and other sturdy community species. In a well-planned tank, they can also work with some medium-sized gouramis or barbs, provided the setup is spacious and the shoal is large enough.
They should generally be avoided with slow, long-finned or delicate fish such as bettas, angelfish, fancy guppies, veil-tail fish and many dwarf gouramis, as fin-nipping may occur. Very small fish may also be at risk if they can fit in the barb’s mouth. The best results come from keeping them in a species-appropriate shoal or in a lively community with plenty of swimming room.
