Aulonocara sp. 'Calico Red Neon'
Vibrant juvenile Malawi peacock cichlid with calico patterning and red neon tones. A striking 3-4 cm fish for a carefully planned cichlid aquarium.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Aulonocara Calico Red Neon is a beautifully patterned Malawi peacock cichlid offered at a juvenile size of 3-4 cm. Known for its developing calico markings and bright red neon colouration as it matures, this fish is a superb choice for aquarists looking to build a colourful African cichlid display. Like other Aulonocara species, it is admired for its elegant shape, inquisitive nature and the way males develop increasingly intense colour with age and good care.
This is a fish best kept in a well-maintained cichlid aquarium with stable water conditions, plenty of rockwork and open swimming space. Although peacocks are generally among the more peaceful Malawi cichlids, they still need the right companions and a sensible stocking plan. With suitable care, they can become confident, active fish that add movement and colour to the middle and lower areas of the tank.
At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy livestock with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new fish arrives ready to settle into its new home. Please note that colour and pattern may vary between individuals, especially at this young size, and males typically become far more vibrant as they mature.

Aulonocara species are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous rift lakes and home to an extraordinary diversity of cichlids. In the wild, peacock cichlids are often associated with sandy areas near rocky habitats, where they forage close to the substrate and use their sensory abilities to detect small invertebrates hidden in the sand.
Lake Malawi is characterised by hard, alkaline water, strong mineral content and warm temperatures. These conditions are important to replicate in the aquarium because peacock cichlids are adapted to stable, mineral-rich water. The “calico red neon” form is a selectively bred aquarium variety, but its care requirements remain rooted in the natural biology of the genus.
In nature, males establish territories and display to females, while females and juveniles tend to be more subdued in colour. This behaviour is reflected in the aquarium, where a well-structured environment helps reduce stress and allows natural interactions to be observed.
For best results, keep Aulonocara Calico Red Neon in a tank designed for Malawi cichlids. A spacious aquarium is essential, as these fish need room to swim and enough territory to reduce aggression. A minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a small group, but larger tanks are always better, particularly if you plan to keep them with other African cichlids.
Use a substrate of fine sand or smooth gravel, as peacocks naturally sift and inspect the lower areas of the tank. Add plenty of rock formations, caves and line-of-sight breaks to create territories and provide shelter. At the same time, leave open areas for swimming. A balanced layout of rocks and open space works best.
Water quality should be kept excellent at all times. Aim for a temperature of 24-28°C, a pH of 7.6-8.6, and hard, alkaline water with good mineral content. Strong filtration is important because Malawi cichlids are active fish and produce a moderate waste load. Regular water changes help maintain stability and support long-term health and colour.
Although many aquarists keep peacocks in mixed Malawi communities, avoid overcrowding. Overstocking can increase stress and aggression. It is also wise to introduce fish of similar size and to keep a ratio that prevents males from constantly competing. Juveniles may appear relatively calm, but adult males can become territorial, especially when mature and displaying.
Aulonocara are omnivorous cichlids with a natural tendency towards small invertebrates and meaty foods. In the aquarium, they do best on a varied diet made up of high-quality cichlid pellets or granules, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia and bloodworm in moderation.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only giving what they can consume quickly. Overfeeding should be avoided, as it can lead to poor water quality and digestive issues. A balanced diet helps maintain colour, condition and breeding health. If keeping your fish with other Malawi species, choose foods suitable for African cichlids rather than high-fat or unsuitable tropical mixes.
Because this fish is still young at 3-4 cm, it is important to offer appropriately sized food. Crushed pellets or fine granules are ideal initially, with food size increased as the fish grows. Consistency and variety are key to raising strong, colourful adults.
The Calico Red Neon Peacock is generally more peaceful than many other Malawi cichlids, but it is still best kept with compatible tank mates that share similar water requirements and temperament. Good companions include other peacock cichlids, selected Copadichromis, and some of the less aggressive Malawi haps, provided the tank is large enough and stocked carefully.
It is usually best to avoid highly aggressive mbuna, very boisterous species, or fish that are too small to compete for food. Fin-nippers and delicate community fish are also unsuitable because they require very different water conditions. In mixed cichlid aquariums, aquascaping and stocking density should be planned to minimise territorial disputes.
As with all Malawi cichlids, individual temperament can vary. Males may become more assertive as they mature, particularly in smaller aquariums or where there are too few hiding places. Keeping the environment structured and spacious is the best way to encourage peaceful behaviour.
