Julidochromis species originate from Lake Tanganyika, one of the world’s oldest and most mineral-rich lakes. In the wild, they inhabit rocky shorelines where broken stone, caves and crevices provide shelter, spawning sites and hunting grounds. Their natural environment is alkaline, hard and very stable, with clear water and plenty of oxygen.
These cichlids are adapted to life among rocks rather than open water. They use narrow gaps and shaded ledges to avoid larger predators, and they often form pair bonds or small family groups. This rock-dwelling lifestyle is the reason they do so well in aquariums built around stacked stonework and defined territories. A Tanganyika-style aquascape not only looks authentic, but also helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Julie Mixed are best kept in a mature aquarium with excellent filtration and stable water chemistry. They are sensitive to poor conditions and do best in hard, alkaline water that mirrors their native lake. A minimum of 120 litres is recommended for a small group or pair, though larger tanks are always better if you plan to keep them with other Tanganyikan species.
Use a substrate of fine sand or smooth gravel, then build a landscape of stable rock piles, slate, lava rock or limestone. Create multiple caves, overhangs and narrow passages so each fish can establish a territory. It is important that the rockwork is secure and cannot collapse, as these cichlids will explore every gap. Leave some open swimming space, but prioritise structure and line-of-sight breaks to reduce aggression.
Ideal water conditions are 24-27°C, pH 7.5-8.5 and hardness around 12-30 dGH. Strong filtration and regular maintenance are essential. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are usually beneficial, especially in stocked cichlid tanks. Good oxygenation is also important, so aim for surface movement and a filter output that keeps the water well circulated.
Because these fish are territorial, it is best to introduce them to a tank that has already been fully cycled and aquascaped. Adding them to an immature aquarium can lead to stress and unstable water quality. If you are keeping a pair, watch for breeding behaviour and be prepared to manage territorial disputes if space is limited.
Julie Mixed are primarily carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet rich in protein. In the aquarium they readily accept quality cichlid pellets, small sinking granules, frozen foods and live foods. Good options include brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia, chopped krill and finely sized insect-based foods. A varied diet helps maintain colour, condition and breeding readiness.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as they can consume in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding can quickly foul the water and is best avoided, particularly in Tanganyika setups where water quality is paramount. While they may nibble at some vegetable matter incidentally, their diet should remain focused on meaty foods rather than high-plant or low-protein mixes.
Choose foods that are appropriate to their mouth size, especially while they are still juveniles. As they grow, they will take larger items, but it is still wise to keep meals varied and manageable. A fasting day once a week can help prevent digestive issues and keep the aquarium cleaner.
Julie Mixed can be kept with other Tanganyika species, but compatibility depends on tank size, layout and the temperament of the individuals. They are generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially around caves and breeding sites. The best tankmates are other fish that occupy different areas of the aquarium and can cope with hard, alkaline water.
Suitable companions may include other peaceful to moderately assertive Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size, such as shell dwellers in a larger setup, open-water species like Cyprichromis, or carefully chosen rock-dwellers in spacious aquaria. Avoid mixing them with very aggressive cichlids, slow long-finned fish, or species that require soft, acidic water. In smaller tanks, it is often best to keep them as a pair or a carefully managed single-species group.
When introducing tankmates, provide plenty of hiding places and avoid overcrowding. Juveniles may appear peaceful, but adults can become strongly territorial, particularly when paired up. Observing behaviour early is important so that any bullying can be addressed before it becomes a problem.
