Inpaichthys kerri
A striking golden form of the Emperor Tetra, ideal for peaceful planted community aquariums.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Golden Emperor Tetra, Inpaichthys kerri Gold, is a beautiful and relatively uncommon South American characin prized for its shimmering golden body, elegant finnage and calm shoaling behaviour. Offered at around 2.5-3 cm, these juveniles are perfect for aquarists looking to grow out a small group into a standout display in a planted community aquarium.
This species is best kept in a proper shoal, where its colour and confidence really come to life. In the right conditions, males develop a richer golden sheen and more extended fins, while females remain slightly fuller-bodied. They are peaceful, active and best suited to aquariums with soft water, gentle filtration and plenty of cover. If you are after a fish that adds movement without aggression, the Golden Emperor Tetra is an excellent choice.

Inpaichthys kerri originates from South America, with populations associated with the upper Amazon basin region, particularly slow-moving blackwater and clearwater habitats in Brazil. In nature, these fish inhabit calm tributaries, flooded forest edges and sheltered areas with leaf litter, submerged roots and dense marginal vegetation. The water is typically warm, soft and slightly acidic, with low mineral content and subdued light.
The golden colour form offered in the aquarium trade is a selectively bred or colour-enhanced variant of the species, but its care requirements remain close to the wild type. Replicating a natural-style environment with plants, driftwood and gentle flow helps reduce stress and encourages natural shoaling behaviour.
For best results, keep Golden Emperor Tetras in a planted aquarium with open swimming space and shaded retreat areas. A group of 6 or more is strongly recommended, as they are more confident, active and visually impressive when kept in numbers. A 60 litre tank can house a small shoal, but a longer aquarium of 90 litres or more is preferable for a stable group and mixed community setup.
Use a soft substrate if possible, and add driftwood, dried leaves and live plants such as Cryptocoryne, Java fern, Anubias and fine-leaved stem plants. Floating plants can help diffuse light, which suits this species well. Filtration should be efficient but not overly forceful; they appreciate clean, oxygenated water with a gentle current.
Recommended parameters are:
Stable water quality is more important than chasing exact numbers. Regular partial water changes, mature filtration and low nitrate levels will help maintain colour, activity and long-term health. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry, as these fish can be sensitive to instability.
Inpaichthys kerri Gold is an omnivore with a preference for small, protein-rich foods. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets or fine flakes as a staple, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops and mosquito larvae. Occasional vegetable matter and spirulina-based foods will help provide balance.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what the shoal can consume within a couple of minutes. Like many tetras, they do best with variety rather than a single food type. A mixed diet supports colour, condition and breeding readiness, and helps keep fish active and inquisitive.
Golden Emperor Tetras are peaceful community fish that pair well with other calm species of similar size. Good tank mates include small rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus, dwarf gouramis, peaceful Apistogramma species in suitably sized tanks, and other non-aggressive South American fish. They also work well in species-only shoals where their colour can be appreciated without distraction.
Avoid large, boisterous or predatory fish that may intimidate or eat them, including many cichlids, barbs with a fin-nipping reputation, larger tetras, and fast-moving species that dominate food. They are also not ideal with very hard-water fish that require different conditions. Keep them in a group, as solitary specimens can become shy and lose much of their natural behaviour.
Compatibility improves greatly in a well-planted aquarium with broken lines of sight and plenty of swimming room. When housed with calm tank mates, they are active, peaceful and easy to enjoy.
