Topaz Cichlid is a compact Central American cichlid for mature structured aquariums, careful pair care and robust tank mates.
Adult size is the maximum length this species reaches at full maturity (scientific sources). The livestock you receive will be younger and smaller — pick a size variant above for the actual shipping size. Photos are AI-enhanced, so the animal may show subtle colour or marking differences.

Topaz Cichlid (Amatitlania myrnae) is a compact Central American cichlid from the Atlantic-slope river systems of Costa Rica and Panama. It is still sometimes traded under the older name Cryptoheros myrnae, so both names refer to the same Topaz Cichlid in the hobby. Expect a confident, territorial fish with subtle gold and blue tones rather than a loose community shoaler.
| Scientific name | Amatitlania myrnae (syn. Cryptoheros myrnae) |
|---|---|
| Adult size | Usually around 8-10 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 120 litres or larger for a pair, with more space for tank mates |

| Temperament | Territorial pair-forming cichlid |
| Diet | Quality cichlid pellets, fine granules, frozen foods and some vegetable matter |
Use a mature aquarium with clean water, sand or fine gravel, wood, rocks and caves. Broken sight lines are important because Topaz Cichlids can claim territories, especially when pairing or guarding fry. They are smaller than many Central American cichlids, but they still need structure and room to avoid constant contact.
A compatible pair can be rewarding. Avoid mixing several territorial cichlids in a cramped tank, and do not treat this species as a peaceful nano fish. Stable water, steady maintenance and careful feeding matter more than chasing an exact number.
Choose robust fish that enjoy similar warm freshwater conditions and will not harass a pair. In larger aquariums, suitable companions may include calm Central American cichlids, sturdy livebearers or medium community fish. Avoid tiny fish, shrimp and delicate long-finned species.
Offer a varied omnivore diet. Use quality cichlid pellets or granules as the staple, then rotate small frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia or bloodworm, plus occasional vegetable-based foods. Keep portions controlled so territories stay clean and water quality remains stable.
