Aulonocara maleri gold
A dazzling gold Malawi peacock cichlid with calm temperament, ideal for colourful hard-water community cichlid setups.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
The Maleri Peacock Cichlid Gold (Aulonocara sp. / Aulonocara maleri gold) is a striking Malawi peacock cichlid prized for its metallic gold sheen, elegant finnage and relatively peaceful nature compared with many other African cichlids. Offered here at 3–4 cm, these juveniles will grow into a beautifully coloured adult of around 10–12 cm, with males developing the richest colouration as they mature.
Peacock cichlids are a favourite among aquarists who want vibrant fish with personality, but without the constant aggression associated with some Mbuna species. The Maleri Peacock is best kept in a properly filtered, spacious aquarium with stable, hard, alkaline water and plenty of rockwork to provide territories and visual barriers. With the right setup, they are hardy, rewarding fish that can become the centrepiece of a Malawi display.
We ship livestock with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new fish arrive in the best possible condition. As with all live fish, we recommend acclimating them carefully and introducing them to a mature aquarium for the smoothest start.

Peacock cichlids are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous cichlid habitats. In the wild, Aulonocara species are often associated with sandy areas and transitional zones near rocks, where they feed by sifting through the substrate and picking out small invertebrates. Their natural environment is warm, mineral-rich and highly stable, with clear water and a high pH.
The Maleri form is associated with the Maleri Islands region of Lake Malawi, and the gold variety has been selectively bred to enhance the bright metallic tones that make these fish so eye-catching in the aquarium. Like other peacocks, they appreciate open swimming space alongside caves and rock formations that allow them to establish territories and retreat when needed.
For best results, house the Maleri Peacock Cichlid Gold in a mature Malawi-style aquarium of at least 200 litres, though larger is always better if keeping a group or mixed cichlid community. A longer tank is preferable to give fish room to establish territories and reduce stress. Use a fine sand substrate where possible, as peacocks naturally forage around softer bottoms and may sift through the sand.
Decor should include plenty of rockwork arranged securely to create caves, crevices and broken lines of sight. Leave open swimming areas at the front and centre of the tank. Good filtration is essential, as cichlids produce a significant bioload and require excellent water quality. Aim for strong circulation and regular maintenance, including partial water changes to keep nitrate low.
Keep water warm and stable at 24–26°C, with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5 and hard water around 10–30 dGH. Stability matters more than chasing exact numbers, so avoid sudden swings. If your tap water is naturally soft, remineralisation may be needed to maintain suitable conditions. A lid is recommended, as active cichlids can jump when startled.
Provide hiding places for subdominant fish and avoid overcrowding. Overstocking can sometimes reduce aggression in Malawi setups, but this must be balanced with filtration capacity and regular upkeep. A well-planned aquascape will help this species display its best colour and behaviour.
In nature, peacock cichlids feed on small invertebrates and other meaty morsels picked from the substrate. In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets or granules, frozen foods such as mysis, krill and brine shrimp, and occasional live foods from trusted sources. A varied diet helps bring out colour and supports healthy growth.
Although they are not strict herbivores, avoid overfeeding rich foods and do not rely solely on mammal-based proteins. Feed small portions once or twice daily, only what the fish can consume in a couple of minutes. Juveniles may benefit from slightly more frequent feeding, but water quality should always remain the priority. A good quality staple pellet should form the basis of the diet, with frozen treats used as supplements rather than the main food.
The Maleri Peacock Cichlid Gold is generally more compatible than many other cichlids, but it is still best kept with fish that share similar water requirements and temperament. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful to moderately assertive Malawi peacocks, haps of similar size, and robust non-aggressive cichlids that will not outcompete or bully them. In larger aquariums, a mixed peacock and hap setup can work very well.
Avoid highly aggressive Mbuna species, very small fish that may be intimidated or eaten, and delicate soft-water species that cannot tolerate hard, alkaline conditions. Keeping multiple males in a small tank can lead to territorial disputes, especially as they mature and colour up. If you want to keep more than one male, provide a much larger aquarium with plenty of visual barriers and a carefully balanced group structure.
As with all cichlids, individual temperament varies. Introducing fish of similar size and adding them together can reduce territorial issues. Observing behaviour during the first few weeks is important, and rearranging décor can help reset territories if needed.
