Overview

Hyphessobrycon sp. peru is a striking, lesser-seen South American tetra that brings movement, subtle colour and natural shoaling behaviour to the home aquarium. Offered at around 3–3.5 cm, these fish are still young and will settle best in a calm, well-maintained aquarium with plenty of swimming space and cover. Like many members of the Hyphessobrycon group, they are most impressive when kept in a proper shoal, where their confidence increases and their colours and behaviour become more natural.

This is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for something a little different from standard tetras. Their understated appearance makes them especially attractive in planted tanks, where dark substrate, driftwood and soft lighting help bring out their best. They are generally peaceful, active in the middle water layers, and suitable for a mature community setup with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates.

At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy live fish with a live arrival guarantee and fast UK delivery, so your new fish arrive ready to settle into their new home with the best possible start.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Hyphessobrycon species from Peru are typically associated with slow-moving tributaries, forest streams, floodplain waters and blackwater-influenced habitats in the Amazon basin. These environments are often shaded by overhanging vegetation, rich in leaf litter, and naturally soft and slightly acidic. Water clarity can vary from tea-coloured blackwater to clearer, gently flowing streams, but the common thread is a warm, calm environment with plenty of cover.

In nature, small tetras like this spend much of their time in loose shoals, feeding on tiny invertebrates, plant matter and organic detritus. Replicating these conditions in the aquarium helps them feel secure and display more natural behaviour. A planted aquascape with roots, branches and open swimming areas is ideal.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

For best results, keep Hyphessobrycon sp. peru in a mature aquarium of at least 80 litres, though larger is always better if you want a fuller shoal and a more stable environment. These fish are active but not boisterous, so a long tank with open midwater space is preferable to a very tall setup. A group of 8 or more is strongly recommended; smaller numbers can make them shy and reduce their natural behaviour.

Use a fine dark substrate if possible, as this helps reduce stress and enhances their appearance. Add live plants such as Cryptocoryne, Microsorum, Vallisneria and floating plants to create dappled light and secure areas. Driftwood, leaf litter and branches can further mimic their natural habitat. Gentle filtration is best, with good oxygenation but no harsh current. Regular maintenance is essential: weekly water changes, stable temperature and low nitrate levels will keep them in top condition.

Recommended parameters: temperature 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, with soft to moderately soft water. They can adapt to slightly broader conditions if acclimated carefully, but stability matters more than chasing exact numbers. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry, and always quarantine new fish where possible before adding them to the display tank.

Feeding Guide

These tetras are omnivorous and will accept a wide range of prepared foods. A varied diet is the key to long-term health and good colour. Offer a quality micro pellet or small flake as the staple, then supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops and bloodworm. Small, frequent feedings are preferable to one large meal, especially for younger fish.

As with most tetras, overfeeding should be avoided. Feed only what they can consume in a couple of minutes, once or twice daily. A varied diet supports immune health, growth and breeding readiness, and helps maintain the subtle natural patterning that makes this species so appealing.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Hyphessobrycon sp. peru is best kept with peaceful, similarly sized fish that enjoy comparable water conditions. Good companions include other small tetras, rasboras, peaceful pencilfish, Corydoras catfish, small plecos such as Ancistrus, and gentle dwarf cichlids in suitably sized aquariums. They also work well in planted community tanks with shrimp, though very small shrimp fry may be at risk.

Because they are a shoaling species, they should not be kept with large, aggressive or overly boisterous fish. Fin-nippers and fast, dominant species can cause stress and prevent them from settling. Avoid mixing them with large cichlids, barbs known for nipping, or predatory fish that may view them as food. A calm community with plenty of visual cover will bring out the best in them.

Compatibility tip: the more secure the environment, the more active and confident this tetra will become. Keep them in a proper group and they will spend more time in the open, showing natural shoaling behaviour.
