The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
White on a crowntail is a study in pure structure. With no colour contrast to distract the eye, everything about this male comes down to the strain's signature spiked fin rays — the webbing reduced so each ray stands out like a tine of a crown — rendered entirely in white across a fish of around 7 cm. Against dark substrate or a backdrop of green plants, a white crowntail male is as close to monochrome sculpture as the hobby gets.
His paperwork reads moderate care, aggressive temperament, and an unusually forgiving chemistry window: pH anywhere from 6 to 8, which takes in practically every UK water supply without adjustment. Hold temperature between 24 and 30 °C and provide at least 38 litres. Company should be minimal — snails are fine, some peaceful shrimp may last though adults can be eaten, and the avoid list covers other male bettas, fin-nipping fish, aggressive or territorial species, long-finned fish that set off displays, and anything large enough to bully or swallow him. He patrols the top of the aquarium and can become territorial, particularly with age and condition.
That 6–8 pH window deserves emphasis: it means this crowntail can go straight into almost any cycled UK aquarium without chemistry adjustment, hard water or soft, which is rarer in this hobby than it should be. Direct his care budget at the fins instead. Crowntail rays have no webbing to support them, so water quality slips show at the ray tips first — crisp, even points are your ongoing health check. Feed him as a carnivore, keep the heater inside 24–30 °C, and resist overdecorating the upper third of the 38-litre-plus tank where he lives. Around three years is the recorded expectation, and a white fish makes every one of those years easy to monitor.
Crowntail rays are delicate, so we pack these males with extra water volume and ship exclusively by licensed live-animal courier, with live arrival guaranteed. Keep his tank free of abrasive decor and the crown stays pristine.
