Overview

The Red Tube Worm, Sabellastarte indica, is a beautiful marine feather duster worm prized for its elegant crown of radioles and its natural, gentle movement in the aquarium. This species lives in a protective tube and extends a feathery fan to capture fine particles from the water column. It is a peaceful, reef-safe invertebrate that brings a truly natural look to a mature saltwater setup.

Our Medium size specimen is ideal for aquarists looking to add a distinctive invertebrate with real visual impact. As with all delicate marine filter feeders, success depends on stable water quality, mature biological filtration and careful acclimation. We recommend this species for established marine aquariums rather than newly cycled systems. With the right care, it can become a long-lived and rewarding display animal.

All livestock is covered by our live arrival guarantee, and we offer fast UK delivery to help your new arrival reach you in the best possible condition.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Sabellastarte indica is a sabellid polychaete worm found in tropical marine waters of the Indo-Pacific region. In nature, feather duster worms typically inhabit sheltered reef areas, rubble zones and crevices where water movement carries a constant supply of microscopic food. They anchor themselves in tubes built from mucus and sediment, extending their crown when conditions are safe and feeding opportunities are good.

This natural lifestyle explains their needs in the aquarium: they prefer stable salinity, clean but nutrient-present water, and gentle to moderate flow that keeps food suspended without blasting the animal directly. They are not active swimmers or burrowers; instead, they are stationary filter feeders that contribute to the biodiversity and realism of a reef display.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A mature marine aquarium is essential. Feather duster worms do best in systems with established live rock, stable chemistry and low levels of sudden change. A minimum of 100 litres is recommended, although larger aquariums are always easier to keep stable. Provide a secure place for the worm to anchor its tube, such as within rockwork, in a crevice, or in a protected area of the substrate where it will not be disturbed.

Water movement should be gentle to moderate and indirect. Strong, laminar flow can prevent the crown from opening properly or cause the worm to retract repeatedly. At the same time, completely stagnant water is unsuitable because these animals rely on suspended particles in the water column. Aim for a balanced flow pattern that moves fine food around the tank while leaving the worm’s location relatively calm.

Stable marine parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers. Keep salinity consistent, avoid copper-based medications, and ensure excellent oxygenation. Because this is a filter feeder, it can be sensitive to poor water quality and sudden swings in temperature or pH. Regular small water changes and careful feeding of the tank will help maintain the conditions it needs.

Recommended parameters: temperature 24–27°C, pH 8.1–8.4, and a stable reef-safe salinity around 1.023–1.026 specific gravity. Keep nitrate and phosphate low to moderate, but do not aim for an ultra-sterile system; a completely stripped aquarium may not provide enough suspended nutrition for a healthy feather duster worm.

When introducing the worm, acclimate it slowly using a drip method where possible. Handle the tube as little as possible and never expose the crown to air for longer than necessary. Place it in a shaded, secure position and allow it time to settle. It may remain withdrawn for a period after arrival, which is normal.

Feeding Guide

Red Tube Worms are suspension feeders and do not graze like fish or snails. They feed by capturing tiny particles from the water, including phytoplankton, zooplankton, and other fine suspended foods. In the aquarium, they benefit from regular target feeding with very fine marine foods such as phytoplankton blends, liquid plankton, reef snow-style products and finely powdered invertebrate feeds.

Feed sparingly but consistently. Overfeeding can quickly degrade water quality, while underfeeding may lead to gradual weakening over time. A good approach is to feed the aquarium in small amounts several times per week, ideally when the worm is fully extended. If you target feed, gently direct a diluted cloud of suitable food near the crown without blasting it with a pipette or turkey baster.

Because this species also captures naturally occurring particles, a tank with healthy planktonic life and moderate nutrient availability is beneficial. Avoid relying on large meaty foods, as these are not appropriate for the worm’s feeding biology. The goal is to provide tiny suspended particles that match its natural diet.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Sabellastarte indica is peaceful and best kept with calm, reef-safe tank mates. Suitable companions include small to medium peaceful reef fish, gobies, blennies, clownfish, cardinalfish, chromis, and other non-aggressive community species. Most ornamental shrimp, snails and hermit crabs are also compatible, provided they do not disturb the worm’s tube or repeatedly pick at it.

Reef-safe corals are generally suitable, but place the worm where its crown will not be shaded or irritated by aggressive coral sweeper tentacles. Ensure there is enough space around the tube for the crown to open fully. It is also wise to keep the worm away from strong sand-sifting fish or animals that may dislodge or bury the tube.

Avoid: butterflyfish, large wrasses, puffers, triggers, angelfish known to nip invertebrates, and any fish that may peck at the crown. Crabs with a reputation for opportunistic behaviour should also be avoided. The worm is delicate and can retract or suffer damage if harassed. If you keep boisterous fish, this is not the right invertebrate for the tank.

In short, choose peaceful tank mates and a stable, mature reef environment. The Red Tube Worm will reward you with graceful movement and a unique natural presence.
