Cichlids are one of the most diverse fish families in the hobby. From tiny apistogrammas to massive oscars, this guide covers the basics of keeping them well.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Aulonocara Turkis is a Turkis or Turquoise peacock cichlid trade strain within Aulonocara. It should be listed as a peacock cichlid, not as if "Turkis" were a confirmed formal species. The attraction is the blue-green male colour, elegant movement and more measured temperament compared with many mbuna.
Young fish may not show full adult colour yet. Mature males normally develop stronger turquoise and blue tones as they settle, feed well and establish position in a suitable Malawi aquarium.
| Scientific anchor | Aulonocara sp. "Turkis" |
|---|---|
| Adult size | 12-15 cm |
| Care level | Moderate |
| Minimum aquarium | 250 litres for a small group |
| Temperature | 24-28°C |
| pH | 7.5-8.6, hard alkaline water |
| Temperament | Semi-aggressive, usually calmer than mbuna |
| Diet | Quality cichlid pellets with frozen invertebrate foods and some vegetable matter |
Keep Aulonocara Turkis in a Malawi-style aquarium with fine sand, open swimming room, rockwork and strong filtration. Lake Malawi peacocks naturally use sandy and rock-edge habitats, so a mixed layout helps them forage, display and retreat without constant confrontation.
Maintain hard, alkaline water and avoid large swings. Good oxygenation and regular water changes are important because active cichlids produce a meaningful waste load.
Use quality cichlid pellets or granules as the staple, supported by frozen mysis, brine shrimp, daphnia and krill in moderation. Avoid heavy mammal-based foods and overfeeding. A balanced diet helps young males colour up naturally.
Good tank mates include other carefully chosen peacock cichlids, calmer Malawi haps and robust Synodontis catfish. Avoid very aggressive mbuna, tiny fish, shrimp and soft-water community species such as guppies, rasboras or tetras.
Will juveniles show full colour? Not always. Males normally improve with age, dominance, diet and stable hard water.
Can it live with mbuna? Only with caution. Peaceful peacocks and calmer haps are usually safer companions.
