Apistogramma baenschi
A stunning dwarf cichlid with bold colour, ideal for planted soft-water aquariums and peaceful community setups.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Apistogramma baenschi 'Inca' is a beautiful dwarf cichlid from Peru, prized for its vivid patterning, intelligent behaviour and manageable adult size. Offered at approximately 3-4 cm, these young fish are ideal for aquarists looking to build a carefully planned soft-water display with real character. Males develop especially impressive finnage and colour as they mature, while females remain smaller and equally fascinating to watch.
This species is best suited to aquariums that are stable, well decorated and designed around the needs of dwarf cichlids. With the right conditions, Apistogramma baenschi can become a rewarding centrepiece fish, showing courtship displays, territorial behaviour and natural parenting instincts. We supply healthy stock with fast UK delivery and a live arrival guarantee for peace of mind.
Although peaceful with suitable tank mates, this is not a fish for a bare or overstocked aquarium. It thrives in a mature, planted setup with soft water, plenty of cover and calm companions. For aquarists who enjoy observing natural behaviour, this species is a superb choice.

Apistogramma baenschi originates from Peru, where it inhabits slow-moving blackwater and leaf-litter environments associated with soft, acidic waters. In nature, dwarf cichlids like this are found among submerged roots, branches, fallen leaves and dense marginal vegetation. These habitats are typically shaded, low in mineral content and rich in natural cover.
The species has evolved to live in complex microhabitats where individuals can claim small territories and retreat quickly into shelter. This is why aquarium décor matters so much: replicating the feel of a natural stream edge or forested tributary helps reduce stress and encourages confident behaviour. A mature aquarium with botanicals, driftwood and fine-leaved plants will suit this fish far better than a sparse display tank.
For best results, keep Apistogramma baenschi 'Inca' in a stable aquarium with soft, clean water and plenty of hiding places. A pair can be maintained in a well-structured tank from around 60 litres, but a larger aquarium is strongly recommended if you plan to keep them with other fish. Because males may become territorial, especially when breeding, visual barriers are very useful.
Use sand or very fine substrate to protect delicate fins and allow natural foraging behaviour. Add driftwood, caves, coconut shells, rockwork with smooth edges and leaf litter to create multiple territories. Live plants such as Cryptocoryne, Anubias, Microsorum and floating species can help diffuse light and provide security. Gentle filtration is ideal; strong current is unnecessary and may cause stress.
Water quality is crucial. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and maintain low nitrate through regular water changes. This species prefers a temperature of 24-27°C, a pH of 5.5-7.0 and very soft to soft water. While it can adapt to slightly broader conditions if acclimated carefully, long-term health and colour are best in soft, acidic water. Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers.
Dim lighting and a calm environment will help this fish settle. If you are keeping a breeding pair, provide at least two or three potential spawning sites so the female can choose a secure cave or sheltered area. As with all dwarf cichlids, avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and temperature.
Apistogramma baenschi is primarily carnivorous and naturally feeds on small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet based on high-quality frozen and live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, mosquito larvae and chopped bloodworm. These foods help bring out colour and encourage natural feeding responses.
Good quality micro pellets or small sinking cichlid foods can also be accepted once the fish are settled, but they should not be the sole diet. Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as the fish will consume quickly. Overfeeding can pollute the water and lead to digestive issues. A varied diet is especially important for young fish and breeding adults.
Occasional fasting days can be beneficial, particularly in mature adults. If you are conditioning a pair for spawning, increase the proportion of live and frozen foods for several weeks to support health and courtship behaviour.
This species is generally peaceful, but it is still a dwarf cichlid with territorial instincts. The best tank mates are calm, non-nippy fish that occupy other areas of the aquarium and will not compete aggressively for food or space. Small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras and peaceful dwarf catfish can work well in appropriately sized, well-planted aquariums.
Avoid boisterous species, fin-nippers and large or aggressive cichlids. Fast-moving fish that dominate feeding time can also stress Apistogramma baenschi. If keeping more than one male, the aquarium should be large and heavily structured, though most hobbyists will have the best success with a single male and one or more females, or a carefully chosen community with plenty of cover.
During breeding, females may become highly defensive around their chosen cave, so tank mates should be selected with this in mind. Good aquascaping and line-of-sight breaks are essential for reducing conflict. When kept correctly, this species is fascinating to observe and can coexist beautifully with the right companions.
