The algae eater fish Parotocinclus spilurus is a tiny, peaceful South American catfish that excels at grazing biofilm and algae in mature, well-oxygenated planted aquariums. Available for sale UK through Tropical Fish Co, this miniature grazer is ideal for nano tanks and planted setups where its gentle, unobtrusive nature and essential housekeeping duties are highly valued.
Parotocinclus spilurus reaches just 4 cm in length and has a compact, armored body with a flattened ventral surface. Coloration is typically pale tan to brown with darker mottling and a distinctive dark spot or band at the base of the tail. The body is covered in bony plates, and the ventral sucker mouth is adapted for grazing biofilm and algae from surfaces. The overall appearance is delicate and unobtrusive.
This species is endemic to Brazil, recorded from the Salgado River in Ceará. In the wild, P. spilurus inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with rocky substrates, submerged wood, and abundant biofilm and algae. These environments are typically clean, stable, and well-vegetated, providing ample grazing surfaces and shelter. The fish clings to rocks and wood, grazing continuously on the biofilm that develops in mature, healthy systems.
Provide a mature, well-filtered aquarium of at least 60 litres with plenty of biofilm-covered surfaces, driftwood, smooth rocks, and live plants. Gentle to moderate filtration and good oxygenation are essential. This species thrives in planted tanks where natural biofilm develops on surfaces, providing a constant food source. Avoid keeping in new or unstable systems, as the fish relies on mature grazing surfaces to thrive.
Maintain clean, stable water between 22–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Regular partial water changes (20–30% weekly) and excellent filtration are essential to keep oxygen levels high and waste products low. This species is sensitive to poor water quality and requires consistent maintenance. Avoid sudden parameter shifts and ensure the tank is fully cycled and mature before introduction.
Parotocinclus spilurus is an omnivorous aufwuchs grazer. In mature tanks, natural biofilm and algae usually provide sufficient nutrition. Supplement with algae wafers, sinking foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach), and occasional small meaty or protein-rich foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp). Feed sparingly and observe closely to ensure the fish is finding adequate food.
Top Tip: Keep in groups of three or more—these small catfish are more confident and display more natural behavior when housed with conspecifics.
This catfish is peaceful, shy, and entirely harmless, spending its time grazing biofilm and algae from surfaces. It is most active during low-light periods, though it may be seen grazing during the day in mature, well-planted tanks. P. spilurus is social and benefits from being kept in small groups, where individuals will often rest and graze near one another. Avoid boisterous or aggressive tankmates that may stress or outcompete it for food.
Ideal companions include small peaceful tetras, rasboras, small peaceful livebearers, snails, and shrimp. Avoid large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, and very boisterous species that outcompete it for food. This species does best in calm, mature, well-planted community tanks with gentle tankmates.
Breeding is uncommon in home aquaria; if successful, it typically requires excellent water quality, abundant grazing surfaces, and stable, well-oxygenated conditions. Eggs are usually laid on hard surfaces or in caves, and the male may guard them. Raising fry is challenging and requires mature water with abundant biofilm and specialized fry foods.
