Green Terror Cichlid (Andinoacara rivulatus) is a bold South American cichlid for aquarists who want colour, presence and real cichlid behaviour. It is hardy once settled, but it is not a gentle community fish. Mature fish can become territorial, especially around breeding, so this listing is best suited to keepers with a large, well-filtered aquarium and a clear tank-mate plan.
Andinoacara rivulatus is native to Pacific-slope drainages from Ecuador to northern Peru. It has been sold historically under Aequidens rivulatus, which is why both names appear in older supplier and aquarium references. The accepted name used here is Andinoacara rivulatus.
The Green Terror name is not just marketing. This is a confident, territorial acara with strong colour and a powerful build. The best specimens show metallic green-blue markings, orange edging on the fins and a much heavier profile as they mature.
Give this fish space, filtration and structure. A sandy or smooth substrate, driftwood, rocks and visual barriers help reduce constant line-of-sight pressure. Rooted plants may be moved or uprooted, so hardy plants attached to wood or rock are safer choices.
For a single specimen or compatible pair, plan at least a 150 x 45 cm base. A mixed large-cichlid aquarium needs far more room, often 650 litres or more, because territorial pressure increases quickly once the fish matures. Stable water quality is essential, so use strong biological filtration and keep a regular maintenance routine.
Feed a varied omnivorous diet. A quality cichlid pellet or stick can be the staple, supported with frozen foods such as prawns, mussel, bloodworm or earthworm portions, plus some vegetable matter. Avoid fatty mammal meats and oversized feeder foods. Several sensible feeds are better than messy overfeeding, especially in a large cichlid tank.
Green Terrors are best kept alone, as a compatible pair, or with robust fish in a very large aquarium. Large Loricariid catfish or active fish of similar toughness may work in the right system. Avoid small fish, shrimp, peaceful community species, slow long-finned fish and other territorial cichlids in cramped aquariums.
