18–26°C · pH 6.5–8 · 30L

A large, active South American grazing fish for mature 500L+ aquariums. Best as a single specimen or a properly planned group in a spacious display with plant-rich foods and strong filtration.
Adult size is the maximum length this species reaches at full maturity (scientific sources). The livestock you receive will be younger and smaller — pick a size variant above for the actual shipping size. Photos are AI-enhanced, so the animal may show subtle colour or marking differences.
Semaprochilodus taeniurus

Silver Prochilodus Red Fin (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is a large, active South American grazing fish with a bright silver body and a boldly marked red-edged tail. It is often grouped with South American tetras in the trade, but it is a prochilodontid: a powerful, constantly moving river fish that spends much of its time grazing algae, biofilm and fine organic matter from surfaces.
This is not a small starter fish. Adult Silver Prochilodus can reach around 30 cm, so it belongs in a long, mature aquarium with open swimming space, strong filtration and stable warm water. It is peaceful toward most unrelated fish, but its size and speed mean tank mates should be medium to large, calm and robust enough not to be unsettled by constant midwater movement.
| Scientific name | Semaprochilodus taeniurus |
|---|---|
| Common names | Silver Prochilodus Red Fin, Redfin Flagtail Prochilodus |
| Adult size | About 30 cm |
| Minimum aquarium | 500 litres or larger; a 150 cm long tank is a sensible adult minimum |
| Temperature | 23-29°C |
| pH | 5.5-7.5 |
| Temperament | Peaceful with other species, territorial with its own kind if cramped |
| Diet | Mainly vegetable matter, algae wafers, spirulina foods and varied sinking foods |
Use a spacious aquarium with a clear swimming lane, secure cover and plenty of biological filtration. River sand, smooth stones and driftwood suit the species well, and natural algae growth is useful rather than something to remove completely. Keep the water clean and well oxygenated, with steady maintenance rather than sudden large changes.
For stocking, a single specimen is the safest choice for many home aquariums. Groups can work in very large systems, but small numbers may quarrel as they mature. Suitable companions include larger peaceful characins, calm cichlids, robust Loricariid catfish and other non-aggressive fish that will not nip fins or compete too heavily at feeding time. Avoid cramped tanks, very small tank mates and aggressive predators.
Although it accepts a mixed diet, Silver Prochilodus should be fed as a mainly herbivorous grazer. Offer spirulina flakes or pellets, algae wafers, blanched courgette, cucumber or spinach, and good sinking foods. Small frozen foods can be used for variety, but rich meaty feeds should not become the staple.
