Overview

Nerita articulata is a hardy marine nerite snail prized by saltwater aquarists for its excellent algae-grazing habits and compact size. Often sold simply as Nerita articulata, this species is a practical and attractive addition to reef and marine clean-up crews, where it spends much of its time browsing film algae from glass, rock, and décor. Its shell is typically robust and patterned, giving it a natural, coastal look that suits both nano and larger marine systems.

This species is best suited to established marine aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of algae growth. It is peaceful, non-invasive, and generally reef-safe, making it a popular choice for hobbyists looking for a low-maintenance invertebrate that contributes to tank cleanliness. As with all live stock, we recommend careful acclimation on arrival. We offer fast UK delivery and a live arrival guarantee for peace of mind.

Although not a “showy” animal in the same way as fish, Nerita articulata is highly valued for its usefulness and resilience. It is an ideal choice for aquarists who want a reliable algae grazer that can help maintain a tidy display without disturbing corals or tank mates.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Nerita articulata is a marine gastropod associated with warm coastal habitats, where it lives on hard surfaces such as rocks, rubble, and tidal zones. In nature, nerites are adapted to areas with regular water movement and abundant algae growth. This makes them well suited to aquarium life, provided their environment is stable and oxygenated.

Like many nerites, this species is a specialist grazer rather than a scavenger that will eat anything. Its natural role is to browse surfaces for microalgae and biofilm, which is why it is so effective in aquariums. The shell structure and strong foot help it cling to rock and glass, even in areas of moderate flow.

Because it comes from a marine environment, Nerita articulata should only be kept in saltwater systems. It is not suitable for freshwater aquariums, and it will not thrive in unstable or immature setups. A mature tank with live rock, natural algae, and consistent water chemistry will give the best results.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

For best results, house Nerita articulata in a mature marine aquarium with stable salinity and good filtration. A minimum tank size of around 40 litres is suitable for a single specimen, though larger systems are always easier to keep stable. This snail does well in reef tanks, fish-only marine aquariums, and nano reefs, provided there is enough grazing surface and no aggressive tank mates.

Provide plenty of live rock, textured décor, and open glass areas for grazing. A moderate water flow is beneficial, as it helps oxygenation and supports healthy biofilm growth. Secure any gaps or overflows, as nerite snails can occasionally explore above the waterline and may climb out if the tank is not covered.

Maintain the following conditions for long-term health:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C
  • pH: 8.0–8.4
  • Salinity: stable marine specific gravity, ideally around 1.023–1.026
  • Water quality: ammonia and nitrite at 0, nitrate kept low

As with all marine invertebrates, avoid sudden changes in salinity, temperature, or pH. Drip acclimation is strongly recommended. Snails are sensitive to copper-based medications, so never use treatments containing copper in a tank housing Nerita articulata.

Feeding Guide

Nerita articulata is primarily an algae grazer. In a healthy aquarium it will feed on film algae, diatoms, and soft growth on glass and rockwork. This makes it a useful member of the clean-up crew, especially in tanks that naturally produce a light algae film.

If the aquarium is very clean or newly established, supplemental feeding may be needed. Suitable foods include marine algae wafers, dried seaweed, and specialist invertebrate foods. Offer small amounts and remove any uneaten food to protect water quality. A varied diet helps ensure the snail remains active and well-conditioned.

Do not rely on this species to survive in an algae-free tank without supplementation. Like all grazers, it performs best when there is a steady but not excessive supply of natural food. Calcium availability is also important for shell health, so stable marine parameters and a balanced reef environment are beneficial.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Nerita articulata is peaceful and reef-safe, so it can be kept with a wide range of marine fish and invertebrates. It is best paired with calm community species that will not harass or prey upon snails. Good companions include clownfish, gobies, blennies, chromis, cardinalfish, cleaner shrimp, and other non-aggressive reef invertebrates.

Potential problems arise with predatory or snail-eating species. Avoid housing it with puffers, triggerfish, large wrasses known to pick at invertebrates, hawkfish that may harass small tank inhabitants, and any fish that routinely nip shells or feet. Crabs and large hermit crabs can also be risky depending on species and individual behaviour.

As with many nerites, this snail may occasionally move around the tank in search of food. Ensure rockwork is stable and that there are no small gaps where it could become trapped. In mixed reef systems, it is generally a very safe and useful addition.
