Overview

The Blue Neon Copadichromis is a beautiful Malawi cichlid prized for its shimmering electric-blue sheen and active, open-water behaviour. Offered here at 3-4 cm, these juveniles are ideal for aquarists building a Lake Malawi display and looking for a fish that will develop into a truly eye-catching adult. As with many Copadichromis species, males become especially vivid as they mature, while females and younger fish tend to show more subtle silver-blue tones.

This species is best suited to established hard-water aquariums with plenty of swimming space, strong filtration and a carefully planned rockscape. Although it is a cichlid, Copadichromis is generally more peaceful than many Mbuna species, making it a popular choice for mixed Malawi communities where tank size and stocking are appropriate. If you are after a fish with colour, movement and a more relaxed temperament, the Blue Neon Copadichromis is an excellent option.

All fish are supplied with a live arrival guarantee and sent using fast UK delivery, helping your new stock arrive in the best possible condition.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Copadichromis species are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, one of the world’s most famous rift lakes and home to an extraordinary diversity of cichlids. In the wild, these fish are typically found in open water or around rocky shorelines where they feed in the water column. Their natural environment is warm, mineral-rich and alkaline, with excellent visibility and stable water conditions.

The Blue Neon form is associated with the same broad ecological needs as other Copadichromis: clean water, plenty of oxygen, and space to cruise rather than hide constantly. Unlike rock-dwelling Mbuna, these fish are more likely to occupy the midwater areas of the aquarium and appreciate a layout that leaves open swimming lanes.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

To keep Blue Neon Copadichromis thriving, aim for a spacious aquarium with strong filtration and regular maintenance. A minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a small group, but larger aquariums are strongly preferred, especially if keeping them with other Malawi cichlids. Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate, along with rock formations that create territories and visual barriers without filling the whole tank. Leave open areas for swimming, as this species is active and enjoys room to move.

Stable water chemistry is essential. Keep the water hard and alkaline, with a pH between 7.8 and 8.6 and a temperature range of 24-27°C. Good circulation and aeration are beneficial, reflecting the oxygen-rich conditions of Lake Malawi. A high-quality external filter or powerful internal filtration system is recommended, and weekly water changes should be part of the routine to keep nitrate levels low.

When setting up the aquarium, avoid overcrowding and do not mix with aggressive species that may outcompete or harass them. If keeping multiple males, provide ample space and break line of sight with rocks and decor. A ratio of one male to several females is often used in breeding-oriented setups, though many hobbyists keep them in mixed groups for display.

Feeding Guide

Blue Neon Copadichromis are omnivorous cichlids that do best on a varied, high-quality diet. In the aquarium, offer a good Malawi cichlid pellet or flake as the staple, ideally one formulated for non-Mbuna species. Supplement this with spirulina-based foods, krill, mysis, daphnia and other suitable frozen foods. Occasional live foods can be offered, but only from trusted sources to reduce disease risk.

Feed small portions once or twice daily, giving only what the fish can consume in a few minutes. Overfeeding should be avoided, as it can quickly affect water quality and may contribute to digestive issues. A balanced diet helps maintain colour, condition and breeding readiness, while also supporting long-term health.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Because this species is relatively peaceful by Malawi cichlid standards, it can be kept with other suitable Lake Malawi fish in a well-sized aquarium. Good companions include similarly tempered haps and peacocks, as well as non-aggressive Copadichromis, Aulonocara and other open-water species that prefer the same hard, alkaline conditions. The best results usually come from keeping fish with comparable size and temperament.

Avoid very aggressive Mbuna, fin-nippers, and species that are either too small to compete or too dominant to coexist peacefully. It is also wise to avoid mixing with soft-water community fish, as the water chemistry required for this species is very different. Careful stocking and a properly planned aquascape are the keys to success.
