The freshwater crayfish Cherax papua, commonly known as the zebra lobster, is a striking black-and-white patterned invertebrate from Papua New Guinea that makes a bold, eye-catching centrepiece for species tanks or carefully planned community setups. This ornamental crayfish displays dramatic colouration with bold zebra-like stripes and reaches a manageable adult size of around 5cm. Available for sale UK aquarists will find the zebra lobster an engaging, active addition that brings personality and visual impact to the aquarium. Though semi-aggressive in temperament, with proper planning and spacious housing this species can thrive and display fascinating natural behaviours.
Cherax papua is instantly recognisable by its bold black and white banding pattern that runs along the body and claws. The carapace is primarily black with striking white bands, creating a zebra-like appearance that gives this species its common name. The claws are proportionally large and similarly patterned, adding to its impressive presence. At 4-5cm juveniles already display the characteristic striping, and as they mature the contrast intensifies. This species moults regularly as it grows, shedding its exoskeleton to reveal fresh colouration underneath. Males tend to develop slightly larger claws than females, and both sexes exhibit the same stunning pattern.
Native to freshwater rivers, streams, and creeks in Papua New Guinea, Cherax papua inhabits clear, well-oxygenated waters with rocky substrates and abundant hiding places. These tropical environments feature moderate currents, stable temperatures, and plenty of submerged wood and vegetation. In nature, these crayfish are territorial and establish burrows or claim rocky caves as their territory. They emerge primarily at dusk and night to forage for food, using their keen senses to locate detritus, plant matter, and small prey. Recreating these conditions in the aquarium helps encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.
Provide a minimum of 60 litres for a single specimen, with significantly more space if housing multiple individuals or tankmates. Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to prevent damage to the soft abdomen. Furnish the aquarium heavily with caves, PVC tubes, terracotta pots, driftwood, and rocky structures to create multiple territories and hiding spots. Dense planting with hardy species such as Java fern or Anubias provides additional cover and security. Install a tight-fitting lid, as zebra lobsters are excellent climbers and will escape given the opportunity. Maintain excellent water quality with efficient filtration and regular partial water changes.
Cherax papua is an omnivorous scavenger that accepts a wide variety of foods. Offer sinking crustacean pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach, and leaf litter to encourage natural foraging. Supplement with occasional protein-rich foods including frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or small pieces of raw shrimp. Provide calcium-rich foods such as cuttlebone or specialised invertebrate pellets to support healthy moulting and exoskeleton development. Feed in the evening when the crayfish is most active, and remove uneaten food within a few hours to maintain water quality. A varied diet promotes vibrant colouration and overall health.
This species is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during moulting periods when it is most vulnerable. Zebra lobsters are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden in caves or under décor and emerging after dark to explore and feed. They are active climbers and will investigate all areas of the aquarium. Territorial disputes can occur if multiple specimens are housed together without adequate space and hiding places. During moulting, the crayfish will shed its exoskeleton and remain hidden until the new shell hardens, a process that can take several days. Handle disturbance carefully, as stressed individuals may become more aggressive.
Best kept in a species-only setup due to its semi-aggressive nature and tendency to predate on smaller tankmates. If tankmates are desired, choose only very robust, fast-swimming fish in a large, heavily structured aquarium with ample hiding places. Suitable candidates might include larger barbs or fast-moving cyprinids that can evade the crayfish. Avoid shrimp, small fish, slow or long-finned fish, other crayfish or lobsters, and delicate bottom dwellers. Even hard-shelled snails may be at risk. Careful observation is essential if housing with fish, and be prepared to separate if aggression occurs.
Breeding is possible in captivity when a male and female are housed together in suitable conditions. Females carry eggs under the abdomen for several weeks before hatching occurs. Provide abundant hiding places and excellent water quality to encourage spawning. Juveniles are miniature versions of adults and require separation from adults to prevent predation. Offer finely crushed foods and ensure adequate calcium for healthy development. Breeding success increases in spacious, well-maintained aquariums with stable parameters and minimal stress. Be prepared for territorial behaviour during breeding periods.
Escape-proof the aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, as Cherax papua is a strong climber and can easily leave the tank. Keep filtration gentle to avoid trapping delicate antennae or legs. Avoid all copper-based medications, which are toxic to crustaceans. Provide excellent water quality and stable parameters to support healthy moulting. After moulting, leave the shed exoskeleton in the tank for the crayfish to consume, as it provides valuable calcium. Monitor tankmates closely and be prepared to separate if aggression escalates. This species is best suited to experienced aquarists comfortable managing territorial invertebrates.
