The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Red from the Benjarong line is a different proposition to ordinary red bettas: this is an ornamental male of around 6.5 cm carrying saturated red colouring with the line's distinctive finish, and his name — borrowed from Thailand's famous five-coloured porcelain tradition — signals the breeding heritage behind him. He flares readily, displays constantly, and holds his red under all lighting.
Build him a fighter's home. Aggressive by record and moderate in care, his approved companions amount to snails, with peaceful shrimp or very carefully selected tank mates conceivable only in larger, heavily planted setups. Excluded are other male bettas, fin-nipping fish, aggressive or highly territorial species, brightly coloured long-finned fish that bait his displays, and small fish he may mistake for prey. The recorded minimum is a substantial 40 litres — give it to him and the activity level repays the space. Water: 24–30 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH. He is a carnivore working the top of the tank, with territorial behaviour rising toward breeding condition, as his record notes plainly.
Activity is his defining trait once settled, and the 40-litre recorded minimum is what makes it visible: short of space he paces, given space he patrols, and the difference shows in both behaviour and colour. Feed his carnivore ration with rotation — line-bred reds hold saturation best on varied protein — and keep the heater anywhere stable inside 24–30 °C. Water chemistry is standard betta fare at pH 6.0–7.5 and 1–15 dGH with weekly changes. His record's warning about small fish being mistaken for prey is specific and worth heeding: nothing under his own size class enters his tank safely. Snails, a planted aquascape and an owner who enjoys a busy fish complete the picture.
Reds from named lines like Benjarong hold their colour with far more consistency than unnamed commercial reds — that consistency is what you are buying. Despatched across the UK with a licensed live-animal courier and our live arrival guarantee.
