The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Twin caudal lobes give the double tail its unmistakable silhouette: the tail fin genuinely split into two full halves, backed by the broader dorsal fin characteristic of the type. Dressed entirely in red and reaching a substantial 7.5 cm, this male is among the larger ornamental bettas we list, and the doubled tail means there is simply more moving finnage on display than any single-tailed fish can offer.
An aggressive temperament rating keeps the stocking plan conservative. Snails make safe neighbours; some peaceful shrimp can persist in heavily planted tanks though predation happens; and carefully selected peaceful bottom-dwellers are possible in larger tanks, with caution and a watchful first week. Leave out other male bettas, fin-nipping fish, aggressive or territorial species, very small fish or shrimp that may be eaten, and bright or long-finned fish that wind him up. He is moderate care: the one extra consideration with double tails is that all that finnage appreciates calm water, so baffle strong filter outflows. Give him 25 litres or more at 24–30 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH; he keeps to the upper levels and may turn more territorial over time.
Bigger betta, slightly different bookkeeping. At 7.5 cm he takes larger carnivore portions than a standard male, and the 25-litre minimum on his record reflects both his size and the waste that comes with it — volume is your buffer. The doubled tail is heavy lifting for any fish, so along with baffled flow give him shallow resting points near the surface; double tails use them more than any other fin type we stock. His red colouring deepens with feeding quality, making diet the most visible lever you control. Otherwise his moderate rating is honest: heater inside 24–30 °C, pH inside 6.0–7.5, weekly water changes, and a watchful eye whenever anything new enters his territory.
Double tails are a small fraction of any betta spawn, which keeps availability tighter than standard fin types — if this red male is listed in stock, he is ready to ship. UK delivery uses a licensed live-animal courier and carries our live arrival guarantee.
