The Smaragd Cichlid, scientifically known as Hypselacara temporalis, is a striking emerald South American cichlid that grows large and rewards keepers with impressive colour and behaviour. Available for freshwater fish UK, this species reaches up to 18cm in length and requires a tank of at least 300 litres. Native to the Amazon basin and adjacent river systems, the Smaragd Cichlid is best suited to experienced aquarists seeking large aquarium fish with strong personality.
A large, robust fish with stunning emerald-green coloration. The body displays iridescent green highlights with subtle patterning. Males may develop a prominent nuchal hump and more intense colours than females.
Native to South America, especially the Amazon basin and adjacent river systems. Inhabits slow-moving rivers with soft, acidic water.
A minimum tank size of 300 litres is essential. Use sand or fine gravel substrate, provide driftwood, rocks, and caves. Filtration must be extremely robust. Maintain soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.5).
