The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Blue, spiked and full of swagger — the blue crowntail is arguably the definitive version of the strain. Reduced fin webbing leaves each ray standing proud in deep blue, and when a 6 cm male flares at his reflection the caudal opens into a full crown of separated points. It is a silhouette no other fin type can imitate, in the colour most keepers picture first when they think of bettas.
Treat him as the fighter he is. The record marks him aggressive, with a tight list of acceptable company: small peaceful snails, and peaceful shrimp in some setups with the understanding that they may be hunted. Excluded are other male bettas, fin-nippers, aggressive or territorial species, large predators, most community fish in very small tanks, and specifically long-finned fish such as guppies and fancy male livebearers, which his instincts misread as rivals. He becomes more territorial in breeding condition. Housing is straightforward: from 20 litres, heated 24–30 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH, with the top of the tank kept calm — crowntail rays are vulnerable in strong current, so gentle filtration is the kinder choice.
His 20-litre minimum makes him one of the more flexible crowntails to house, but the crown sets the rules wherever he lives: gentle filtration, smooth decor, and water quality you can defend, because separated rays show neglect before anything else in the tank does. Run the heater anywhere in 24–30 °C and keep it there; temperature swings stress bettas more than any fixed point within their range. A carnivore diet with occasional variety holds the blue dense and dark. He will spend his three recorded years almost entirely in the upper third of the tank, so invest your aquascaping effort at the surface line — floating cover, a resting leaf — rather than in elaborate hardscape he will ignore below.
