The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Oversized pectoral fins on a short-finned female plakat make for an unusual combination: the body stays compact and athletic while the big ears flare out either side of the head like wings. This mixed-colour female line runs to about 6.5 cm and pairs that look with the hardiness plakat-type bettas are known for — no trailing finnage to snag, tear or weigh her down.
Despite being female, her record advises caution on company. She is semi-aggressive and the guidance is to keep her alone, or with very carefully chosen peaceful tank mates in a larger, heavily planted aquarium. Peaceful snails are reliable; peaceful shrimp may be compatible though hunting is possible. Avoid other bettas of either sex, fin-nipping species, large or aggressive fish, fast boisterous tank mates, and anything requiring markedly different water conditions. The recorded minimum is a roomy 40 litres, with water held at 24–28 °C — note the slightly narrower temperature band than many of our betta lines — pH 6.0–7.5 and hardness 1–15 dGH. Expect her in the top portion of the tank, and expect territorial behaviour to sharpen at times.
Hardiness is this female's quiet selling point. Short plakat fins mean no fin-rot anxiety, no flow restrictions and no surface-resting requirements — she handles ordinary filtration that show-finned bettas resent. Put the saved effort into her water instead: the 24–28 °C band on her record is tighter than most of our bettas, so a thermometer check should join your feeding routine. The 40-litre minimum gives her genuine swimming distance, which an active plakat female uses far more visibly than a heavy-finned male would. Feed her carnivore fare, expect her at the surface by week one, and treat any territorial posturing as the normal species behaviour her record describes rather than a problem to fix.
Colour within this mix varies fish to fish; the big-ear pectorals and plakat form are the constants. If you plan eventual breeding projects, note she can become noticeably territorial. UK-wide despatch via licensed live-animal courier, protected by our live arrival guarantee.
